Among other things, she sug- gests that: *Jokes about Jewish mothers are the result of "matriphobia" among Jewish men. ("Many Jew- ish men blame their mothers for their sexual insecurities and are deeply angry at them for having trained them to behave in such a way as to preclude the validation of their masculinity. They feel it was their mothers who had made them into what the general society derides as wimps and nerds.") *Because of "their own inade- quacies regarding physical ag- gression," Jewish men are jealous of black men. *Jewish laws of family purity are the result of "men's fear of female sexual power." Jewish Women: Jewish Men contains three parts focusing on "Patterns of Traditional Jewish Culture," "The Impact of Assim- ilationism on Jewish Public and Private Life," and "The Struggle for a Correct Reading on Reali- ty." Ms. Cantor also served as editor of The Jewish Woman: 1900-1985. T hree just-published books offer new insight on the Holocaust. The Buchen- wald Report (Westview), translated by David Hackett, is a report compiled by Allied in- telligence officers sent to the death camp upon its liberation. Their job was to speak with in- mates before their release and compile information to be used against the Nazis during war- crimes trials. The story of what happened to the document is itself unusual. For years, the few copies of the report had vanished. Then one last carbon copy was discovered several years ago. In The Buchen- wald Report it is presented in its complete version for the first time. The work is in two parts. The first half comprises the team's findings, including how Buchen- wald was organized and how it ran, the names of the prisoners and how they were treated by the Nazis. The second half contains the inmates' own accounts of their lives — the beatings, the deaths, the SS guards — all taken before their release. Kindertransport (Plume) is Diane Samuels' play recounting the life of a 9-year-old girl, Eva, sent to England to save her from the death camps. Though safe, Eva nonetheless feels alienated. She changes her name to Evelyn as she attempts to become assimilated in her new home. She marries and has a family. Then her daughter learns the truth of Eva's life. Though fiction, the work is based on the true story of 10,000 Jewish children saved on the Kindertransport from certain death at the hands of the Nazis. Nuremberg: Infamy on Tri- al (Viking Penguin), by Joseph Persico, uses new documents to examine the war-crimes trial of some of the Nazi regime's top leaders. Using reports from the Nurem- berg prison psychiatrist and com- mandant, the prisoners' own letters and journals, as well as the judges' accounts, Mr. Persico recreates life at the trials and be- hind the scenes, where something as small as a prisoner's name- plate could become an issue. "(Hermann) Goring noted that white enamel name plates had been placed over each cell. He was annoyed that the Americans, as usual, had neglected any ci- vility. His plate read simply, 'H. Goring,' no rank, no title, as if he were a sh.opkz-.:eper. - 1J Designed & Installed By Our Glass Specialist For Your Free Estimate or Consultation Call Our Glass Experts at: 810 3 53 -5770 GLASS And Visit Our Southfield Showroom at: A Clear Reflection of Quality 22223 Telegraph Road Since 1964 (South of 9 Mile Road) *for a limited time, with ad 411:00keliMat4figeittAka.
