Singer Goes On Record
With New Jewish Album
MICHAEL ELKIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
L
isa Wanamaker, whose
dance credits include the
Jerusalem Group of Con-
temporary Dance in Israel
and the Toronto Dance Theatre,
has made a dramatic turn to
records.
Her new CD, Shirim ("Songs"),
featuring more than 20 songs in
Hebrew, Yiddish and Ladino, has
just been released.
`Tye had a dance career all my
life," says Ms. Wanamaker, "but
"Some of that goes back to
World War II," when the Dutch
hid their country's Jews from the
Nazis.
Lisa Wanamaker has nothing
against recording in the United
States, but sometimes, she says,
"it's much harder to do things
here than elsewhere.
"Jewish people in this country
have a little hesitancy when it
comes to [acknowledging] their
own. But the minute you

I wanted to do something with
my singing."
What she has done is lent her
voice to a winning album, her
first. "It was important to me
that it be Jewish, important
to my roots," says Ms. Wana-
maker.
Indeed, she is rooted in Yid-
dishkeit. Her mother, Edith
Basha Wanamaker, is a veteran
of the Yiddish and English stage.
The play's the thing for other
members of the family, too: Lisa's
late uncle, Sam, was a prestigious
actor and founder of the Shake-
speare Globe Center; cousin Zoe
is an acclaimed actress; and her
brother, Marc, is a Hollywood his-
torian.
Ms. Wanamaker's new album
is a Dutch treat — the album was
recorded in Holland.
"The Dutch community is
interested in cultures other
than their own, especially Israeli
and Jewish culture," says
Ms. Wanamaker.

leave the country, you get recog-
nized."
Abroad, says Ms. Wanamak-
er, Yiddish is recognized as "an
exotic language."
Among some Jews here, she
says, the language doesn't trans-
late as a winner.
It won Lisa Wanamaker over
years ago. But Jewish culture has
always held sway with this grad-
uate of the Los Angeles Institute
of Jewish Education and of the
Habonim movement.
Trained in dance movement in
New York, Los Angeles, England
and Israel, T Wanamaker pon-
ders her next move, which will
also be in the recording field: an
album this summer with Israeli
composer Uri Ophir.
Next year in Jerusalem? No,
maybe right here at home, says
Ms. Wanamaker.
"I'm hoping that from these
two albums some people will
recognize what I can do and
say, 'Let's try her in English
now.' "
