L
eon and Hilda Lucas of
Oak Park have recently
created the Lucas En-
dowment Fund at the JCC with
a generous donation. The pur-
pose of this fund is to provide an
annual program at the JPM
Building focusing on the State of
Israel in areas related to eco-
nomics, social issues, politics, cul-
tural arts and spiritual matters.
The yearly program will take
place around Israel Indepen-
dence Day and will be organized
by (IRP) the Institute for Retired
Professionals.
Hilda and Leon Lucas have long
been associated with the Center
at the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Building. Mrs. Lucas was a social
worker at an outpost office of
Jewish Family Services located at
JPM in 1957 and while she was
working, her son Jerry attended
nursery school in the building. Dr.
Lucas, a retired professor at
Wayne State University, served
on the Center's Board for five
years and both Lucases sat on the
original committee which orga-
nized IRP as well as the JPM com-
mittee established in the '80's to
expand and build a swimming
pool on the site. Today, with the
goal of expansion realized, the
Lucases, who are both retired,
take full advantage of JPM's new
and modern facilities.
Dr. Lucas is a Health Club mem-
ber who swims and exercises dai-
ly. Mrs. Lucas attends the Center's
special senior exercise classes four
days per week and they are in-
volyed in IRP's Russian American
Discussion Group and the Is-
rael/American Group as well as
many other Adult Services pro-
grams.
The Lucases recently celebrated
their 49th wedding anniversary
on June 30. They have two chil-
dren. Dr. Miriam Medow, a psy-
While we all enjoy the warmer months, there are times when exercising
outdoors just isn't good for you. Excessive heat and humidity can make
even relaxed exercise a chore or a strain on you. It's great to have the op-
tion of an indoor workout, and then relax by our fantastic outdoor pool.

"We feel that the Center is a
very important part of the com-
munity" said Dr. and Mrs. Lucas.
"It is a port of entry for new-
corners and helps keep the corn-
munity together while meeting
social and recreational needs. IRP
has given us an intellectual and
social outlet. The fact that the in-
dividual groups plan and learn
on their own is especially attrac-
tive."
The Center is most grateful to
the Lucases for their support and
looks forward to many interest-
ing programs relating to Israel.
