nterested in scouting out
Scandinavia this summer? Be
sure to include Denmark in
your itinerary; and certain-
ly Copenhagen, with the capital
people who saved the lives of
thousands of its Jewish citizens
during World War II.
There is lots of beauty in
Copenhagen. Lots of history
(Jewish and otherwise). Lots of
sights to see. Good things to eat
and drink.
History buffs will remember
that Denmark was occupied by
Nazi Germany in World War II.
But Sweden was not. Sweden
was neutral.
In a remarkable act of na-
tional courage, the Danish peo-
ple saved the lives of almost its
entire Jewish population.
When the Nazis ordered all
banish Jews to wear an arm-
band with the yellow Star of
David on it, the king of Denmark
wore one in public the next day;
and he encouraged all of his fel-
low Danes to the same.
When the Nazis tightened the
screw, and matters went from
bad to worse for the Danish
Jews, their countrymen hatched
a plan to save as many Jews as
possible.
The plan worked. Out of a to-
tal Jewish population of 7,500,

more than 7000 were stealthily
put on a flotilla of tiny fishing
boats. The Jews were smuggled
to safety in neutral Sweden in
one short, dramatic night. When
the Jews landed in Sweden, they
were given clothes, supplies and
even jobs.
The rescue effort by the Danes
is graphically commemorated in
the Museum of the Danish Re-
sistance Movement in Copen-
hagen. The museum is
conveniently located near
Churchill park in the downtown
area.
The museum is free, open
every day but Monday, and the
hours during the busy summer
season are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Other things to see and do in
Copenhagen?
If you like shopping, you can
stroll along the mile-long Stro-
get (pronounced STORY-et),
the pedestrian shopping s
treet which is replete with
stores and restaurants of every
kind.
One of the city's most famous
attractions is Tivoli Gardens, a
marvelous, huge amusement
park. An amazing assortment
of restaurants and cafes dot
the landscape throughout the
park. Be sure to stay into the
evening when the colored lights

You could lose things
like extra weight. High
blood pressure. And high
blood cholesterol levels.
The very things that con-
tribute to heart attack and
stroke.
All you have to do is in-
vest wisely at the super-
market.
Buy more in the fresh
produce, pasta, breads
and cereals sections. And
purchase fish, poultry and
lean meats instead of fatty
or processed meats.
Switch to low-fat dairy
products and margarine.
And check the nutritional
listings on food labels.
In short, be selective
about how you play this
market. Because no mat-
ter how much you lose,
you've got a lot to win.
