lenges. The main one: being tak-
en seriously.
Annabel Cohen remembers
one instance during a function
at Congregation Shaarey Zedek.
A party-goer walked into the
kitchen to talk to the person in
charge and immediately ad-
dressed a tall man, assuming he,
and not Ms. Cohen, was the busi-
ness owner.
Or take the times her partner
Ms. Aaron has been patted on
the back and called "honey" by a
supplier.
"You want to take them aside
and ask them if they would do
that to a man," Ms. Aaron said.
After a business deal fails or
a low bid is not accepted, Jill Pol-
lock, who is also president of the
human resources and manage-
ment consulting business Pollock
Consulting Group Inc., will study
the reasons for the outcome. On
occasion, when all logical reasons
do not explain why a customer
did not take a bid, she is left to
believe it was because the busi-
ness was owned by a woman.
But instead of crying discrim-
ination, she deals with the dis-
appointment in a different way.
Her advice: "You either handle
it politically or you bide your time
and kill them later."
Despite the challenges and ob-
stacles, the businesses run and
owned by women are thriving.
Projections of the business cli-
mate in the next few years reveal
that the labor force will grow by
1.3 percent, David Brophy said.
The only people left to make
up that difference are women
and immigrants," he said.

The influx of women alone
may bring other social and gov-
ernmental changes, Mr. Brophy
said. As a member of the White
House Conference on Small
Business, he plans to recommend
making child care tax deductible
and reforming tax laws regard-
ing the home office.
"Those costs fall dispropor-
tionately on women," he said.
"We have to make the playing
field level for women to compete
fairly in the marketplace."
Women alio are banding to-
gether to help each other out. Sup-
port networks are popping up in
nearly every major city to provide
information and assistance to fe-
male entrepreneurs. Foundations
that provide low- or no-interest
loans as well as counseling are
also available for the asking.
"There are so many opportu-
nities for women," Mr. Brophy
said. "It may be easier for them
to enter businesses now than in
the past." 0
