Introducing

Exercise. May Risk
Lung Damage

JACK WILLIAMS
SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Ever have a bad air day? People
who live in big cities have plenty,
especially during the May to Sep-
tember smog season, when out-
door exercise can be as hazardous
as inhaling a pack of cigarettes.
Cyclists, in-line skaters and
runners are at greatest risk of
lung damage, especially if they
train in urban areas thick with ve-
hicular traffic in midday or early
afternoon.
A recent study in the Los An-
geles area found that active chil-
dren suffer a 10 percent to 15
percent reduction in lung function
by the time they reach second
grade.
With the multitudes of outdoor
athletes, many of whom train on
their lunch breaks, that can make
for a breathtaking workout.
Especially when you consider
that studies have equated a half-
hour of rurming on a smoggy day
to smoking a pack of cigarettes,
according to the Penn State Sports
Medicine Newsletter.
The environmental culprit ap-
pears to be ozone, an ingredient
in smog created in the atmosphere
when gases ors vapors of organic
chemicals called hydrocarbons
combine with nitrous oxide com-
pounds in the presence of sun-
light.
Researchers in the Netherlands
recently found that very low lev-
els of ozone in the air significant-
ly reduced lung function and
caused shortness of breath, chest
tightness and wheezing among a
group of amateur cyclists who ex-
ercised vigorously outdoors.
"We have known for a long time
that exercise in the laboratory
while breathing in relatively low
concentrations of ozone tem-
porarily lowers lung function,"
said Dr. Jonathan Samet, chair-
man of the Department of Epi-
demiology at the Johns Hopkins
School of Hygiene and Public
Health in Baltimore.
"This study shows that the
same phenomenon takes place at
ozone concentrations that are
found in many parts of the Unit-
ed States and the world."
To minimize your health risks
from ozone during exercise, the
American Lung Association sug-
gests:
• Concentrate strenuous ac-
tivities during the early morning
and evening when smog levels are
lower.
• Don;t exercise outside when
air pollution is at dangerous lev-
els, as noted in media weather re-
ports. Stop immediately, if you
experience tightness in the chest,
coughing or wheezing,
• Stay at least 30 to 50 feet
away from busy roads and high-
ways when you exercise. O
