Aviv as a resort without even go-
ing on the beach. Each of the
three hotels I visited had its own
resort ambiance: luxury rooms
with balconies, lobby lounges
with sea views, pool decks with
refreshment bars, lounge chairs
and umbrellas.
A stanch Sheraton fan who de-
clined a friend's invitation to try
out another hotel this time, Clair.
Kamhi was enjoying a five-week
visit to her favorite hotel in what
is also her favorite city in Israel.
It was easy to see why she was
pleased with the Sheraton, which
was my first stop on the beach-
front. My spacious room had a
balcony directly overlooking the
beach. An elevator led down to
the "beach" level where we could
sign out thick beach towels at the
door and then cross the street to
Frishman beach, in the heart of
the action. Then, too, there was a
) deck with two pools, plus friend-
ly and helpful staffers through-
out the hotel.
The Sheraton prides itself on
friendly service, and it show.
From the personable and chat-
ty bellhop who first took me to
my room — he turned out to be
from New Jersey — to the pa-
tients and knowledgeable
concierge who answered all my
questions, this international staff
was clearly trained to please.
Next stop was the Moriah
Plaza. This comfortable, conve-
nient hotel, which also had
panoramic sea views from its
lounges, was situated right on
Kikar Plaza, so that walk out-
doors meant I was right on the
multi-level plaza with its array
of outdoor eateries and shops.
The location also allowed ho-
tel guests direct access to the
beach from the pool deck. It was
the only one of the three hotels
I tried with this convenience.
From the deck, it was just a two-
minute walk down the steps to
the soft sand.
But I didn't even need the
beach to enjoy sea water; the ho-
tel had its own large seawater
pool, divided into lanes for lap
swimmers like me, with a large
clock posted for timing a swim.
Gradually, I was shifting al-
most entirely into relax mode:
taking long, refreshing swims in
the pool, relaxing on the pool
deck, then enjoying the beach in
late afternoon.
But I still had "work" to do —
) there was one more hotel to ex-
plore as I covered the beachfront.
This time, I packed by bags and
headed for the Tel Aviv Hilton.
With all these pleasures, I was
becoming all too easily attuned
to Tel Aviv as a beach resort.
When it was time to leave, I had
to tear myself away from the
beachfront. After a week enjoy-
ing the sand, the sea, and the
amenities of hotels geared to
beach-loving guests, I would sure-
ly miss Miami on the Mediter-
ranean. 0
