Call us. AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY' Emma Schaver, center, receives the History Award from Gilbert Borman, Suzanne Shifman, Judy Levin Cantor and Mary Lou Zieve. he fifth annual Leonard N. Simons History Award was recently given to Emma Lazaroff Schaver at the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan annual luncheon. Mrs. Schaver, age 90, spoke with vigor and commitment about her journey 50 years ago to Israel and her experiences pre- senting concerts in Hebrew and Yiddish at displaced persons camps after World War II. Dur- ing the post-war period, she vis- ited every camp in the American zone. Gilbert Borman, whose grandfather Abraham Borman worked on Jewish community ac- tivities with Emma Schaver, pre- sented the award. Mary Lou movitz and George Stutz. Some of the Society support- ers include: Sue Shifman, Burt and Katie Borman, Mort Zieve, Barbara and Jerry Cook, Jeanette and Oscar Cook, Sylvia Pollak, Edythe and Frank Mulivor, Doris Easton, Marjorie Krasnick and Oscar Schwartz. OPERA BALL The ninth annual Michigan Opera Ball was recently held at the General Motors Building with 325 patrons. The MOT announced this year's event received $50,000 from General Motors and $116,000 in ticket sales. The evening included din- ner, dancing and an auction. "This event focuses on an important period of rebirth in the company's history and the city of Detroit's ongoing re- naissance.
