Tidbits from
Jewish history.

Golda Meir was born
Golda Mabovitch in
1898 in Kiev, Rus-
sia. She came to the
United States in
1906 and settled in
Milwaukee. She
moved to Palestine
in 1921 with her
husband, Morris,
and lived on a kib-
butz before getting
active in politics. In
1956 she was
named Israel's for-
eign minister, be-
coming one of the
few women political
leaders at the time.
She was elected Is-
rael's prime minis-
ter in 1969.

Moishy and Sarah and their parents are out camping near lovely Lake Michigan. One
night they look up and can't help but notice all the Magen Davids (Stars of David)
in the sky. In fact, they see 18 of them. Can you find 18 Magen Davids in the pic-
ture?

Oak Park resident
Phyllis Koenigsberg
has a reputation
for making an
incomparably
delicious challah.
Here's her recipe:

A Tasty ChallahTo Make For Shabbat

3 pkg. yeast
1 1 /2 cups water
1 cup oil
11 cups flour
I 1 /2 cup hot water
1 egg yolk
4 tsp. salt
I tsp. sugar
4 eggs
I tsp. water
3/4 cup sugar

Dissolve 1 cup oil, 1 1/2
cups hot water, 3/4 cup sug-
ar, 4 tsp. salt in large bowl,
then add four eggs. Dis-
solve yeast in 1 1/2 cups
water, then combine with
oil mixture. Add flour and
knead for five minutes.
Place dough in bowl, lightly
oiling top. Cover with towel
and let rise about 1 1/2

hours.
Shape challah into twists
or rounds. Let rise again for
20 minutes. Beat egg yolk
with 1 tsp. sugar and 1 tsp.
water. Brush on top of chal-
lah. Bake in preheated 350
degree oven for 30 minutes.
Makes about six challahs.

• Make "Israeli ice" for
your drinks. Fill ice trays
with blue-and-white corn-
binations, freeze and eat.
Some possibilities: milk
and blueberries, vanilla ice
cream and blue M&Ms.
• Become an interna-
tional Jewish family.
You will need:
posterboard
scissors
paint
Research the traditional
garb of several Jewish
communities around the
world. Then paint life-size
versions, with a hole cut
where the face should be,
on posterboard. After the
pictures have dried, place
your face in the empty
hole. You can see how you
look as a Yemenite Jew, or
one from Ethiopia, or one
from China.
• Make a photo map of
Israel. Ask friends and
family for all their old post-
cards or photos showing
sites in Israel. Then draw
a huge map of Israel. In-
stead of simply writing the
cities' names, place photos
and cards on their corre-
sponding locations.
• Make your own Jew-
ish-theme stamp pads.
You will need:
cardboard, cut into 2x2"
squares
glue
pencil
thick twine
stamp-pad ink or paints
Draw your favorite Jewish
design (a menorah, map of
Israel, Magen David, drei-
del) on the cardboard block.
Next, trace glue over the
design. Press one strand of
twine atop the glue. Set
aside until glue has thor-
oughly dried. Stamp into
ink or paint and make
some fun art.
