INTERMARRIAGE page 19

nothing to do with Christianity,
Pastor Crowley insists.
'What we're talking about is a
living relationship with Christ,"
he says. "And that should touch
every area of life, day in and day
out."
top his desk sits a large
platter of candy-coated
almonds. Imam Mu 7
hammad Karoub always
gives some to young couples
about to wed, asking each to feed
one to each other. It can be a kind
of sweet harbinger of things to
come — many children, good
health, a marriage free of acri-
mony.
The nut is a mere token.
But marrying another Muslim
is certainly a guarantor of wed-
ded bliss, the imam says.
Imam Karoub is director of the
Islamic Federations of the United
States and Canada, based in
Detroit. A Sunni Muslim (Sunnis
comprise about 83 percent of the
Islamic population), he presides
at numerous funerals and wed-
dings throughout the country.
Imam Karoub says that Islam
absolutely encourages marriage
within the faith.
"It gives newlyweds a little
head start in life," he says. "It also
removes possible friction, and
when you remove an obstacle
from the life of a person, that's
commendable under religious
law.
"The prophet (Mohammed)
said, 'He who removes an obsta-
cle from the road will be re-
warded in heaven.' " Directing
Muslims to marry other Muslims
is "for their uplifting, not their
subjugation."
But here in the United States
it's inevitable that some Muslims
will meet, and date, and eventu-
ally fall in love with those of oth-
er faiths, he says.
There are two very different
sets of rules for Muslim men and
women interested in intermar-
riage. Under Islamic law, the fa-
ther determines the religion of
the children, so while a male
Muslim should marry within the
faith, there is leniency when it

comes to who he can pick as his
bride.
"She must be a 'People of the
Book' "— namely a Christian or
a Jew — Imam Karoub says.
"She cannot be an atheist or idol
worshipper." Women, however,
are forbidden from marrying any
non-Muslim.
"We feel that the family will
follow the father (in his religious
leanings)," he explains. "So the
women and her children and her
progeny will be lost. What we're C
doing (by forbidding such unions)
is looking out for that seed."
At the same time, Islamic law
encourages marriage, and if you
tell a woman she may not wed
her non-Muslim boyfriend and,
as a result, she never marries at
all, "it's almost a sin," Imam
Karoub says, "And I don't want
to be in my life in a situation
where I deprive a woman of love.
Marriage is a God-given right."
So Imam Karoub has worked
out something of a compromise.
But he qualifies it: "Of course,
some aspects of Islam don't ac-
cept this."
If a Muslim woman insists on
marrying a Christian, for exam-
ple, Imam Karoub would begin
by questioning the man about his 7
faith.
"Do you love and honor Moses
and Aaron?" he would ask. "Do
you believe in Jesus? And have
you ever heard of Mohammed,
the son of Abdullah, and do you
believe he could be the prophet?"
At this point the imam en-
courages the non-Muslim to "go
study more about Islam," then re-
turn. In every case except one
they have done just that, and
come back ready to make a
pledge to the faith, the first step
toward conversion, Imam Karoub
says.
Still Imam Karoub's first goal
is to see more Muslims marry
other Muslims. And the best way
to do this, he says, is by getting
young people of the Islamic faith
together and then hope for the
best — "hope," the imam says,
that "God will do His work." [1]

An Apple
For Your Teacher

Just because school is out and summer is in full swing does
not mean your favorite religious-school teacher should be for-
gotten.
Take a few minutes and think about who that teacher may
be and then call The Jewish News. Tell us why we should
feature your favorite teacher in an upcoming back-to-school
supplement.
This isn't a homework assignment. Just pick up your phone
before July 10. Dial (810) 354-7123, Ext. 310, and leave us a
message with your name, age and phone number, along with
your teacher's name and school, and why you think he/she
should be highlighted. [II
