Ben-Gurion Airport. He'd greet
a worker there with a "Shalom
Aleichem." He'd get the return
answer of "Aleichem Shalom."
He'd then ask if there were any
tefilli 11 and talleisim he could use.
The answer would be "yes."
The examples went on, but
Rabbi Lau made his point. The
continuum ofJudaism has as its
base the Torah. That code is as
relevant today as it was thou-
sands of years ago. For it to re-
main the central nervous system
of our religion, however, we can't
keep trying to find ways to dilute
it or modernize it.
Check other lost civilizations
and learn why they are no longer
here. Their continuity was lost.
The laws of the Torah are here
for modern interpretation
whether the word "modern"
means 1995 or 2095. We have to
seize the opportunity to use these
codes. Not using them means we
automatically lose them.
That's what the rebbe wanted
to prevent.
It's difficult., but maybe we
should all check the "fruit" grow-
ing on our trees. If there's none
there, if we're turning away gen-
erations of families from Ju-
daism, then maybe it's not the
guys in the black hats and beards
whom we should fear.
Check that. "fruit." on the
rebbe's tree, and you'll see fami-
lies by the thousands coming over
to the Torah they long misun-
derstood or feigned indifference
to.
We don't have to be Lubavitch
to learn more. But as Rabbi Lau
said last Sunday, the rebbe died
without leaving behind any chil-
dren. Instead, he left thousands
of orphans. He left all of us. Ell
