Do the necessary alter- ations. Make sure the skirt or pant leg is the right length. * Invest in a few expensive quality suits. They'll last and are interchangeable with other articles of clothing, probably al- ready in your closet. * Wait for sales. Often, the best time to buy clothes is when stores receive shipments for the upcoming season and need to clear what is currently on the racks. * Discount or outlet stores can have quality merchandise at inexpensive prices. Be patient and keep looking. * Variety or mixing and matching makes old shirts, jackets or pants look new and fresh. Accessories change the look of an outfit, too. * Go shopping in a friend or relative's closet. Borrowing an item provides a completely new look and helps reduce the "what am I going to wear" stress. Colors are also important. In the business world, black, navy and gray have always been con- sidered power colors. Earth tones give off a more relaxed message and are a powerful fashion color. "If someone wants a more fash- ionable approach, rather than ex- pressing it in color, do it in style," Ms. Schwartz said. As for Ms. Hertzberg, she keeps her colors basic, generally black, navy and ivory. Then to add some splash and variety, she dresses up an outfit with colorful blouses. "I'm always shopping and adding clothes to my closet. I look for classic pieces that will last. I also love to find sales at expen- sive stores because their mer- chandise is good quality and is made to last. You can always find cashmere sweaters on sale in May." Grand River, East Lansing (517) 3334000 NEW SUMMER HOURS Mon.-Thurs. 10.9, Fri.-Sat. 10-8, Sun. 12-5 n Thursday night, Philip Beron watches the ever- popular television show "Friends." When he is not watching the comedy that portrays the light, hearted lifestyle of a tight-knit group, he spends time with his own circle of friends, seven other young Detroiters all trying to earn a living while enjoying life. The 31-year-old Southfield physician doesn't have any room- mates and doesn't live across the hall from three women, like the characters on the NBC program. But, he "can stand on his apart- ment balcony and look across into (his friend Susie Marusak's) her apartment." If they both stand on their bal- conies, they can see each other while talking on cordless phones. "There is no romance between us," he said. "She is one of my best friends." Dr. Beron takes Ms. Marusak's aerobics classes to meet women, and they are constantly setting each other up. Aside from Ms. Marusak's roommate, Debbie Hammer, the others in their group of eight don't live in the same Southfield com- plex. They do hang out and have \ dinner several times a week. Four 'of them own a boat together. It's not exactly Hollywood script ma- terial, but their closeness resem- bles that of the inseparable cast on one of the hottest shows on television. Characters on "Friends" aren't exactly like Dr. Beron's real-life friends. Most likely they are not like anyone's friends. However, aspects of these TV personalities and the issues they face — dat- ing, friends, jobs and parents — are universal. On "Friends," Monica (Courteney Cox), discouraged with dating, is hopeful about some day meeting Mr. Right. She has had to work hard for every- thing she has. Monica shares her apartment with roommates Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston).
