"If I had to describe the core
fans, I would say they are very
family-oriented, very down-to-
earth, very patriotic and a little
more conservative than not," said
Mr. Rosenthal, whose program
invites listeners to call in with re-
quests and comments.
"They are very loyal to the mu-
sic, artists and radio stations. As
announcers, we try to do that, too.
It all sort of works together."
Maintaining a high level of
concentration and staying fo-
cused are among the strongest
on-the-job challenges faced by
Mason and Dixon.
"When Gary and I both start-
ed, we would get off the air and
be totally drained," Mr. Rosen-
thal said. "We constantly have to
think about what we're going to
say after the next record stops —
hopefully something significant,
entertaining or informative.
"Also challenging is the tran-
sient nature of the business. My
wife and I left some good friends
behind in Columbia, so it was
hard to adjust when we first got
here.
"Joining Congregation Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses was the
most helpful thing that we did be-
cause we met people with very
similar interests. We were lucky
to get to know a group of people
close to our age.
A high-school
job led to
a career.
"In other cities, we also found
that the best way to meet people
was through the synagogues."
Mr. Rosenthal has found that
the best part of being a disc jock-
ey is the positive impact he can
make on other people's lives.
"When I was at a station in Au-
gusta, Ga., I saw a story in the
paper about a mother caring for
a 16-year-old son paralyzed from
the neck down," recalled Mr.
Rosenthal, the father of a 3-year-
old daughter.
"They didn't have a handi-
capped-accessible van, and the
mother had to do a lot of lifting.
Because the son had grown so
big, it was very hard for her to
help him, and she didn't know
what she was going to do. Some-
one had volunteered to donate a
van, but they still needed to have
it outfitted.
"We got on the air, and we told
listeners we were going to take
donations. In four hours, we
raised $4,000 — enough for the
van and some cash for them, too.
"The mother and son came to
the station, and we got to meet
them. It turned out he was a coun-
try music fan, and it was very
touching. We felt good about be-
ing the conduit for those dona-
tions, but the listeners were the
ones who really came through." O
