"'Me Jews of Miami Beach" ex-
hibit offers hundreds of photos
and artifacts of those four
decades, including modules on
such themes as Family Life, Busi-
ness Life, Lifestyle, School Days,
Jewish Tradition and World War
H.
They are wonderful and en-
dearing: at a YMHA Purimspiel
in 1916, Fannie Moss creates an
absolute sensation, appearing as
Queen Esther, garbed from neck
to knee in a dress of seashells she
herself had gathered on the
beach. That same year, toddler
Felix Goldstein, in knitted white
cap, sweater and leggings, is pho-
tographed aboard an open-jawed
alligator. The picture on one wall
of the exhibit is unclear: Was the
alligator alive or stuffed? Felix
survived the photo op, to join,
many years later, the thousands
of Jewish Floridains who fought
in World War H, as highlighted
in one of the exhibit panels.
Posters of the early 1920s
abound at the show — come-ons,
of a sort, to seduce New Yorkers
into purchasing land in the big
boom-and-bust real estate mar-
ket of the time. Greedy and un-
scrupulous realtors made
millions in the buying frenzy;
most of the speculators lost their
shirts.
The buxom figure of an inno-
cent and unwitting shill of the
1925 marketing strategists am-
ply dominates one large poster.
"Swim all Winter," is the mes-
sage; just below is Malvina Weiss,
in a fairly discreet, two-piece
bathing-suit, scampering through
the shallow wavelets at the shore-
line.
Seven decades later, Malvina
(who, today, would have to be in
her 90s) may have passed on to
the Big Seashore-in-the-Sky. But
one would hope she is actually
still alive and well in the land of
flowers ("Florida," in Ponce's ro-
mantic Spanish). However, im-
mortalized in the museum poster,
Malvina fulfills Ponce's dream;
she remains forever young and
beautiful.
Also still young and beautiful,
even in his 80s, is Dr. Sam
Brown, who conducts the best of
all tours ofJewish Miami Beach
and environs. Sam created the
first walking tours ofJewish New
York back in the late 50s, and
he's been doing the same (on foot
and on bus) for some 30 years in
Miami Beach.
Sam guides and gabs, on group
tours to many places of Jewish
interest in the area — syna-
gogues, mansions, neighbor-
hoods, Judaica shops, kosher
restaurants and, of course, the
Ziff Jewish Museum himself.
