— because they fear it increases
the risks of breast cancer or be-
cause they already had cancer —
are good candidates for the soya
diet," says Dr. Amnon Brzezins-
ki, head of the Hadassah
Menopause Clinic.
"Women who have gone into
menopause prematurely because
their ovaries were removed due
to cancer, and those who have
other cancers at a young age,
tend to suffer considerably be-
cause they are not permitted to
undergo HRT," he says.
Japanese women, whose diet
is rich in soya, are known to
have relatively mild symptoms
of menopause and a much-
lower risk of breast cancer.
Eating soya schnitzel or hot
dogs as a source of phyto-estro-
gens is not very helpful, Dr.
Brzezinski says, because they
contain relatively little soya.
But tofu, the tasteless white
stuff, is 100 percent soya, and
flax seed is also rich in phyto-es-
trogens.

True Insomniacs
Tend To Sleep Well
ALISON ASHTON COPLEY NEWS SERVICE
nsomniacs are no sleepier
during the day than their non-
insomniac counterparts, ac-
cording to an article in a recent
issue of the journal Sleep.
It would seem logical that in-
somniacs would be weary during
the day, but Kenneth Lichstein
and his colleagues at the depart-
ment of psychology of the Uni-
versity of Memphis, and the Sleep
Disorders Center at the
Methodist Hospitals of Memphis,
Tenn., found it isn't so.
Some people who describe
themselves as insomniacs may
actually be short sleepers.
Someone who only needs six
hours of sleep a night may create
an artificial insomnia sleep pat-
tern of waking and dozing in or-
der to stay in bed longer than the
body demands.
Subjects in a study, which in-
cluded men and women, were
evenly divided between those
who described themselves as good
sleepers and those who said they
were insomniacs.
The key may be in how the
participants perceived the qual-
ity of their sleep. Both "normal
sleeping" insomniacs and normal
I
sleepers stayed asleep 90 percent
or more of their time in bed.
"True" insomniacs were those
who slept less than 90 percent.
The researchers found that the
differences were modest and that
sleep in all the study participants
was quite similar.
True insomniacs
were those who
slept less than
90 percent.
The researchers also found
that daytime sleepiness varied
little between insomniacs and
sleepers.
That's not to say that insom-
nia doesn't have daytime conse-
quences, Dr. Lichstein said.
"Other researchers have found
that insomniacs are more de-
pressed and anxious than nonin-
somniacs. Often you can't tell if
the insomnia is the result of de-
pression or anxiety or the cause
of these problems."

nyone who owns more
than one pet knows that
animals, like children, can
suffer from sibling rivalry.
But that doesn't mean pets can't
co-exist peacefully, says veteri-
narian Linda K. King in a recent
issue of McCall's.
Even cats and dogs can live in
peace. Puppies and kittens ad-
just to each other quickly, but
full-grown animals can learn to
get along, too. Keep a grown cat
and dog apart for a few days,
A
then supervise their early time
together.
Two dogs should be introduced
on leashes in neutral territory.
Two cats should be separated
for a while and rotated from room
to room to adjust to each other's
scent. When they finally meet,
expect hissing and growling.
Also, remember that animals
of the same species tend to get
along better with the opposite
gender.
