Jewish News
Wins Awards
he Jewish. News has won
three Rockower Awards for
Jewish Journalism, pre-
sented last week at the an-
nual convention of the American
Jewish Press Association.
The paper won first place for
excellence in overall graphic de-
sign among newspapers with a
circulation of 15,000 or more for
Page 1 of the Dec. 8, 1994, issue.
The page was designed by Deb-
bie Schultz and Robyn Katz.
Staff writer Ruth Littmann
won second place in investigative
reporting for her series of articles
on United Hebrew Schools
Transportation. The stories re-
ported that UHS buses had re-
ceived poor evaluations from the
state police department, which
undertook an inspection of the
system to determine if unsafe
T
buses had been used to transport
schoolchildren and other pas-
sengers. UHS Transportation
has since closed down.
Also taking a second-place
award was Associate Editor Eliz-
abeth Applebaum, who won in
the features category for "Good-
bye, Sebastian." The story fo-
cused on 6-year-old Sebastian
Mainster Dittmann, who died of
a brain tumor, and his relation-
ship with his fellow students at
Hillel Day School.
Also taking awards were our
sister papers in Atlanta and Bal-
timore.
The Atlanta Jewish Times,
where the Detroit Jewish News'
Phil Jacobs also serves as editor,
won an award for feature writ-
ing. The Baltimore Jewish Times
received six awards. ❑
