1=11 State Gives Home A Passing Grade 0_ 2 , ,,rurag Lease RUTH LITTMANN STAFF WRITER T he Michigan Department of Public Health on June 20 completed a full inspec- tion of Menorah House, the Privately run alternative to the /Jewish Home for Aged's former facility in Detroit, Borman Hall. Lois Hawver, acting MDPH li- censing officer, said Menorah House in Southfield showed sub- stantial improvement over re- sults from its last full inspection in September 1994. "Staffing,'s better than ever," responded David Hayes, Meno- rah House administrator. "We have a pretty good and stable workforce in place. There is nev- er enough (staff), but that's an ongoing struggle in our business. Everyone would like to have a one-to-one resident/staff ratio, but that's not possible." Five state inspectors found the quality of care at Menorah House ,has increased since the home ',changed hands last fall. Although the survey lists no level A viola- tions — the most serious code in- fringements — it details areas calling for special attention. "The results will show that we had quite a number of deficien- cies," Mr. Hayes said. "But I was very encouraged to hear that the deficiencies that inspectors men- tioned resulted in no negative outcomes for the residents." The MDPH report called for better documentation, assess- ment and charting. It also cites rehabilitative and restorative care as areas needing improve- ment. Mr. Hayes says his staff will fine-tune the system and put the state's orders into action. Meanwhile, the Jewish com- munity continues its involvement with the operation. The auxiliary of the Jewish Home for Aged rims the gift shop and snack bar. Vol- unteers, including schoolchildren, visit the elderly residents and help facilitate programming. "I think the community is do- ing a good job," Mr. Hayes says. "And I think we're being well-re- ceived." ❑ Gelberman, Ruthie Goldberg, Eileen Gross, Leah Irons, Esther Landsman, Leah Lauer, Rachel Levin, Susan Levitin, Maxine Lieberson, Yehudis Rabinowitz, Sarah Radner, Naomi Ribiat, Reva Rivlin, Ezra Roberg, Chana Rosen, Kathy Rosenzweig, Rab- bi Binyomin Rothstein, Chaya Leah Rothstein, Rosemary Schimmel, Rabbi Chaim Schloss, Chanie Schwab, Carol Seligson, Esther Sherizen, Dobi Simcha, Sharon Smith, Batya Snider, Chana Solway, Ayala Sperka, Chaya Sora Stein, Cheryl Stoll- man, Sarah Wayntraub, Chavie Weingarden.
