"Friends" cast (clockwise from top): David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow,
Matt LeBlanc, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, and Matthew Perry.

Phoebe makes money by sell-
ing barrettes on the street and
playing guitar in the subway and
sees the good in everyone. One
week she might be crazy about
a Japanese businessman. The
next week it's a street mime and
then a 53-year-old butcher. She
breaks up with him not because
of his age, but because he smells
like chicken and she doesn't eat
meat.
Like Monica, Rachel has a job
and problems with men. Howev-
er, her problems are different.
She has no real career (she works
as a waitress in a coffee shop) and
left her fiance at the altar after
realizing she liked the idea of get-
ting wedding gifts more than the
idea of marrying the guy. Pam-
pered her entire life, Rachel finds
her degree in art history and
dance minor aren't exactly tick-

ets to a decent job.
One friend who would like to
be at the altar with Rachel is
Monica's brother, Ross, a 26-year-
old paleontologist. Once married
(his former wife now lives with
her female lover), Ross dreads liv-
ing the life of a single guy, but
hates dating.
Joey (Matt LeBlanc) doesn't
mind being single because he
loves women. As he tries to pur-
sue his dreams of becoming an
actor, Joey does everything pos-
sible to pursue women. Round-
ing out the group of friends is
Joey's roommate, the romanti-
cally detached and professional-
ly unmotivated Chandler
(Matthew Perry).
Together, these six characters
live the typical, yet atypical life
of 20-something young adults. ❑
