same level of commitment as full-
timers do and tend to be more
temporary than full-time work-
ers, he said.
"My general commitment and
philosophy is to have full-time
Jewish educators," he said.
"Our work is very seasonal and
very responsive to the communi-
ty needs," he elaborated. "If the
person is not there (due to a part-
time status), it is more problem-
atic."
Barbara Klarman, the presi-
dent for the agency, said the cuts
were expected. She was elected
to the position Thursday evening
at the annual meeting.
"We are just making sure we
come in under budget," she said.
"Sometimes there is a little fine-
tuning that has to be done to
make sure that happens, and
that is how you do it."
Despite the layoffs, Mr.
Gelberd said changes would not
affect programs set for the sum-
mer or those planned for the fall.
And with a potential increase in
the appropriation from the
Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit for the
agency's next fiscal year, the pos-
sibility of more programming and
staffing is strong.
"If everything- comes through
as planned we will be expanding,

Give The Jewish News.

Parents! Continue the tradition. Give your children another great
gift...a subscription to The Jewish News. It was a chapter you

started teaching your children at a very young age. In it were the holidays, rituals and

joys of Jewish life. And now as your children start a new life, and eventually a new fam-

ily, you can keep those past lessons alive and growing. A gift subscription to The Jew-

ish News brings young couples a first-hand look at their community. From the events

and happenings of the day, to the challenges of the future. We can help add meaning to

their lives. And, at the same time, serve as a foundation for building a proud family...just

like the one they came from.

not shrinking," he said.
While this is the first time the
agency has scaled back on staff
for the summer, it is not unusu-
al for local schools to cut staff or
close for the summer.
In fact, most educators in the
community have the summer off.
At Hillel Day School, Akiva
Hebrew Day School and Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah, the classrooms
close and teachers go home. The
office staffs at these schools pre-
pare for the year ahead, process-
ing registrations and handling
other clerical duties.
"We have an office staff of two
and they are busy throughout the
whole year," said Barry
Eisenberg, executive director of
Akiva. "They keep up with ev-
erything in the school year. The
difference in the summer is that
they aren't taking kids tempera-
tures or dealing with kids corn-
ing in the office all day."
At some of the temple and
synagogue schools that AJE
serves, administrators and of-
fice workers take the summer
off, returning in late July or ear-
ly August to prepare for the up-
coming year.
While many afternoon schools
close for the summer, some do of-
fer day camps which require few-
er workers than full staff. ❑
