morning. I had a friend who got
magical herb cures (dispensed
only at midnight) from an Or-
thodox rabbi, and another,
Denise from South Africa, who
at 24 already was fluent — re-
ally fluent — in six languages.
I also became acquainted with
people with whom I never would
have imagined I'd have much
contact.
When I was a junior in college,
in 1979, I was living in the
dorms on Mt. Scopus. In April
there was a long break for Pe-
sach, and after the holiday some
friends and I went to the Sinai
on vacation. It was a miserable
trip. I was so sick I was delirious
and could do little more than lie
around. I spent my birthday in
a sleeping bag. We had a terri-
ble time getting a bus home.
"I wonder
what will
happen today?"
Back at the dorm, I was sur-
prised to find my bulletin board
covered with notes in Hebrew.
"Please come see me immedi-
ately, Room 204," one read. "I
have something for you," and "I
am waiting for you, Room 204."
I didn't know anyone in Room
204.
The dorms were still relative-
ly empty (I had come back from
vacation several days early), and
so it was quiet that morning as
I approached Room 204. I
couldn't help but notice the writ-
ing in Arabic on the door.
The first thing I saw when I
entered the room was the pic-
tures. Yassir Arafat everywhere.
And one of those Palestinian
flags. More pictures of Arafat.
What could this person possibly
want with me? "You left me
some notes," I said haltingly.
I could see he was disap-
pointed.
"Oh yes," he said. "Your par-
ents in the United States sent
you a birthday cake. But of
course you weren't here to get it.
Not many people were in the
dorms, but the delivery person
found me. So I kept the cake for
you for several days but then it
got stale."
"Thanks, anyway," I said.
Two days later, I was sitting
in my room when someone
knocked on the door. I was sur-
prised to see the student from
Room 204 again.
"I bought something for you,"
he said. "You see, I got thinking
about that cake and I felt real-
ly bad."
He handed me a large, white
box, tied with thin string. I
pulled open the top. Inside was
a fresh birthday cake.
