to reflect her emotion for her sub-
ject.
`The deeper I get into my work,
the more emotional it gets for me,"
said Ms. Silk. "At times, I have
tears in my eyes as I'm working."
At those times, it might be un-
clear whether she is overcome by
the passion she has for her art or
the fact she is overjoyed by the re-
sult of turning around her life.
Before photography, Ms. Silk
admits she was miserable. She
hated her job as a secretary. It
was mundane, routine — and
didn't require an ounce of cre-
ativity, she said. In the early
1980s, she quit the corporate
world. "I just started searching
for what I wanted to do. Literal-
ly, in the middle of the night I
woke up and knew I wanted to be
an interior designer."
Yet her time spent in creative
design clashed with the more
mundane business matters. The
endless tasks of ordering, invoic-
ing and dealing with vendors be-
came tiresome, she said. So, she
kept searching.
Before a trip to Mexico, Ms.
Silk realized she needed a new
camera. It would turn out to be
a case of serendipity.

Patience is a
prerequisite.

Through the lens of a Nikon 35
mm, Ms. Silk not only saw Mexi-
co, but her budding ambition.
"Having passion for photography
has changed everything in my
life," she said. "It started off as a
risk, now it's a reality. The road
has its peaks and valleys, but it's
a wonderful road."
Her 35 mm has been set aside
for a medium-format camera
which offers a larger negative that
gives a sharper picture, and a
"truer" rendering of color, she
said.
As a visual artist, Ms. Silk said
"her soul was awakened" by the
paintings of watercolorist Geor-
gia O'Keefe, whose flowers and
landscapes capture the natural
and unsettled territory of the
American Southwest.
Recently, Ms. Silk traveled to
Arizona to photograph the desert
and red rock canyons against the
Southwestern cobalt-blue sky.
"It's a inspirational site that could
make anyone a poet," she said.
It's a long way from her days of
drudgery and boredom in the but-
toned-up corporate world. "Most
people don't live their dreams be-
cause they have a hard time be-
lieving they can succeed," she
said. "When I fell in love (with
photography), I was determined
to succeed."
After ten years of "doing what
she loves," Ms. Silk prefers to see
her life as a mysterious drama.
After all, she's learned that there
