said having a middle school in ad-
dition to the elementary grades
may also attract people to the
community who otherwise would
not choose Ann Arbor.
"In my opinion, this is a very
positive statement for the Ann
Arbor community," he said. "It
says a lot about our dedication to
Jewish education."
Ms. Gitelman said the parents
must give her the go-ahead by fall
so she will have a year to find a
teacher, locate portable class-
rooms for the classes to meet on
the JCC grounds and plan a cur-
riculum. The parents must also
have 10 children committed to
the sixth grade to make it eco-
nomically feasible, she said.
"We also have to make sure we
can afford to do this and still
maintain the quality that we
have," she said.

"There are issues you have to
face as the children get older," she
said, adding that separation of
the sexes may be an issue as the
children approach post-b'nai
mitzvah.
She also was pleased by the in-
terest of the parent body and the
support from the community,
something that hasn't always
been there.
"There was a feeling in the
community when the school was
started in 1975 that you owe it
to the community to support
public schools," Ms. Gitelman
said.
After years of decline in Ann
Arbor schools, parents are now
looking for alternatives to public
schooling.
"It has taken us several years

we are an essential part of the
Jewish community," she said. ❑
