lakes which is the hub for many
excursions deep into the Bernese
Oberland.
At Interlaken Ost station, the
scene colorful. Tourists with back-
packs, hardy mountain climbers
with walking sticks, and locals
taking a ride up the mountain all
eagerly boarded the cheerful cog-
wheel train which would climb
steadily high into the mountains.
Some would be going even
higher than Grindelwald, which
is the starting point for trains to
Klein Scheidegg and also to
Jungfraujoch, the highest peak
in Europe.

The Silberhorn is
a resort hotel
and Jewish
culture center.

The train ride to Grindelwald
was as memorable as I recalled
from an earlier trip. On this
route, the mountain scenery was
even more dramatic than on the
ride to Arosa, with sheer drops,
dense trees, and hairpin turns
that the train took easily.
An hour later, we pulled into
the chalet-style train station of
Grindelwald. Set against the
backdrop of towering and ice-
capped mountain peaks, the town
is often called the "glacier village."
Stepping off the train, I could
see the Eiger mountain peak, en-
folded in billowing clouds, and
the looming Wetterhorn peak. In
the heart of town was a colorful
playground where children were
merrily riding down the sliding
r
boards as they looked up at
mountain peaks.
Nearby, a signpost with arrows
pointed the direction to the ma-
jor hotels. One listing was espe-
cially noticeable. Nest to the
name Silberhorn were Hebrew
letters spelling out the word
L
"kosher."
This four-star hotel was just a
short walk from the train station;
and soon I was at the entrance,
where a mezzuzah was posted.
Inside, the amenities included
suites with balconies, a sauna,
Jacuzzi and fitness center and a
large outdoor garden with terrace.
Beside all this, the hotel has
full Jewish facilities, The 65-seat
chapel not far from the lobby is
equipped with bimah, ark, and
Jewish art works on the wall.
Minyans are held daily. Then,
too, there's a chapel, a mikvah,
and a dining room where kosher
meals are served, with meat
shipped from kosher butchers in
Basel and Zurich.
The Silberborn is not only a re-
sort hotel but a Jewish culture
center in the mountains. Ru-
manian-born owner Meir Wagn-
er regularly plans special
events—Jewish art exi fnod
festivals, lectures and more. O
