The Cancer AnswerLine provides medically accurate and personalized answers to the many questions people have about can- cer — everything from risk reduc- tion and detection methods to treatment options and clinical tri- als. "After the shock wears off, one of the first things many people who have been diagnosed with cancer do is gather information about their illness," says Dr. Max Wicha, di- rector of the Cancer Center. "But often they find the information that's available — either in libraries and bookstores or from friends and family -- is confusing, over- whelming or simply out of date." The Cancer AnswerLine nurs- es have at their fingertips contin- ually updated cancer information from a database containing specifics on more than 40 types of (/ cancer and all major treatments. They also draw from reference books, brochures and recent sci- entific and consumer articles. Printed information developed by the Cancer Center and organiza- tions such as the National Cancer Institute and the American Can- cer Society is sent to callers at no charge. "We've tried to create a com- prehensive resource, not only for '` people diagnosed with cancer and their family members who may need assistance in navigating the cancer care delivery system, but also for individuals who want more information on ways to reduce risk or what to do if they're worried they have cancer," says Juanita Parry, a registered nurse and Can- cer AnswerLine operator. Although the Cancer Answer- Line is primarily an information service, the nurses advise any caller who needs to be seen by a doctor to make an appointment with his or her physician. If the caller doesn't have a personal physician or requests help in lo- cating one, the nurses provide a re- ferral based on the caller's needs ti and interests. "The Cancer AnswerLine serves as a 'front door,' or single point of entry, for people to access the Can- cer Center and its wide range of re- sources, particularly until our new building opens in the fall of 1996," Dr. Wicha says. The Cancer AnswerLine nurs- es can be reached at 1-800-865- 1125 and are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:36-\ p.m. Calls received after hours are returned the next business day.
