5. Once a false rumor about us
spreads, may we deny it to peo-
ple who've heard it, even when
doing so might condemn the
source of the dirt as an out-and-
out liar?
Answer: Absolutely. "It's your
obligation to do so," Rabbi Sil-
berberg says. "You have a duty to
protect yourself."
Your best bet is to approach the
liar and tell him to stop. Then ex-
plain to others that the rumor is
false and its source is misguided.
It's little wonder that "word"
and "sword" differ by just one let-
ter. How do we heal once knifed
by loshen hora? Rabbi Irons of the
Kollel recommends taking the
high road.
"Don't lower yourself by get-
ting into the fray. You, yourself,
will become sullied in the process.
Stand up for who you are," he
says. "If you keep your dignity
and reaffirm your own goodness
without attacking your attacker,
I think that ultimately you'll
win."
Sara Eisemann, a clinical so-
cial worker with Jewish Family
Service, says, "The more defen-
sive you become, the more people
tend to doubt what you're saying."
And, if the rumors are true, if
the evil words do in fact reflect
your evil actions, then don't just
resolve to change. Start to
change. Between Rosh Hashanah
and Yom Kippur, Jews beg for-
giveness by embarking on a plan
to earn it.
"I think people will give you a
chance if you own up to it, take
responsibility for it and say you're
working on a change," Ms. Eise-
mann says. "Of course, anything
you say isn't going to hold any
water until you've rectified what
you've done." ❑
