abilities from Jewish families,
JARC also provides its clients an
opportunity to develop indepen-
dent living skills.
Many JARC clients work with-
in the community, or do assem-
bly and subcontract work at the
Jewish Vocational Service among
other places. Assistance through
JARC also provides many adults
with developmental disabilities
the opportunity to attend syna-
gogue, celebrate Shabbat and re-
main kosher.
With its 45-member board of
directors and a monthly newslet-
ter sent to a well-focused list of
supporters and prospective
donors, JARC gets the message
out when it needs either goods or
services, said Dan Medow, vice
president of JARC and chairman
of the Goods and Services Com-
mittee, which oversees the Busi-
ness Buddies program.
"We simply publish a list of
goods and services that are need-
ed, then make contacts in the
business community," he said.
"With the board (of directors) be-
ing a cross-section of the com-
munity, it's usually through word
of mouth that the call gets out."
During the last three years,
"word of mouth" has provided
JARC with a range of goods and
services, including plastic bags
from Advance Bag and Packag-
ing, paint supplies from Mercury
Paint, and printing services from
Walker Printery Inc.
A few Business Buddies pro-
vide JARC employees with spe-
cial benefits. Dr. Barry Feldman
conducts physicals for all JARC
employees. Voice-tel of Michigan
installed JARC's phone system
to enhance communications. And,

arranges centerpieces for board
meetings and special occasions.

berg, JARC's fund-raising coor-
dinator. "I deal with the owner of
the business," she said. "Because
there are no strings attached and
people know their gift will be
used wisely, confidence has
grown in our organization."
Ms. Friedberg leads the effort
to raise 33 percent of JARC's an-
nual budget. The majority of
fund-raising is derived from its
once-a-year concert. Last year,
$1.8 million was raised.
"To respond to a need, that's
the 'buddy system," said Myron
Milgrom, executive vice president
of Mercury Paint, considered
JARC's original Business Buddy.
Long before the Business Bud-
dies program was established,
Mercury Paint provided supplies
to JARC.
"As they kept growing, (Ms.
Keller) would apologize and say,
We need more paint,"' said Mr.
Milgrom. 'We've told her that the
commitment is that we supply
the paint. It doesn't matter how
many JARC homes there are."
After 75 years in the paint
business, Mr. Milgrom said the
third generation of family own-
ers considers it part of its corpo-
rate mission to "give something
back to the community." It's a dic-
tum, he said, handed down from
the founders, Jacob Soberman
and Max Milgrom, European Or-
thodox Jews who believed that
"you shall not separate yourself
from the community."
In addition to being a Business
Buddy, Mercury Paint is one of
the prime sponsors of the "Paint
the Town" program, which re-
stores and paints homes in De-
troit neighborhoods.
Dr. Paul Feinberg handles a
different type of restoration.
When he served on the JARC
board seven years ago, he real-
ized that he could directly provide
an essential service to JARC's de-
