West of Haggerty Three Weeks of Father's Day ERICA MEYER RAUZIN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS am, for a variety of unusual reasons, going out of town for 19 days, beginning on a Mon- day, covering two Shabbats, and ending on a Friday morning with a red-eye flight from L.A. back home to Miami. I am going on a rare vacation trip, just my mother and me. Mom was very ill last year, and now she is, thank Heaven, very well. This is her celebration of life and survival, and — with the help of my husband — Pm going along. I expect to have a wonderful time, if I can just get out of town. I am trying to delegate my life before I go. I am handing chunks of my responsibilities — mostly involving three children and the I a familiar and benevolent adult presence, when the children get home. They will arrive in two sep- arate carpools, one for the five- year-old and the eight-year-old, who will come home, every day, with the same neighbor, and one for the sixth grader, who leads a more complicated life than her junior siblings. The tutor will come late after- noon every day, to help with homework and to start the process of being sure it gets done. Daddy will finish that process, but the tutor will help youngsters over the rough spots. I have written notes to all the teachers, especially the five-year- old's pre-kindergarten team. The person who is taking the biggest chunk, and who is also best equipped, best trained and most highly motivated, is my husband. He's about to have three weeks of one big constant Father's Day, standing at the head of an army that includes carpool parents, the cleaning lady, the tutor, the high school sophomore next door, the children's teachers and various friends and relations. The sophomore will come in the back door each morning, put out breakfast and make school lunches, while Daddy gets the kids up, dressed and off to school. He'll have to wake up at six to do that; if he had to make box lunch- es, too, he'd be getting up at five. The cleaning lady will be here, he starts swiping other's nap blankets and grabbing all the graham crackers, at least they'll know why he's so ornery. He is the one I most fret about leaving. It is hard to explain a three-week absence to a child who doesn't quite understand what a week is. To tide him over, I bought a pack of Lion King post cards, numbered them, and wrote him a mash note on each one (not that he can read). I haven't left my husband any presents, beyond a freezer full of prepared dinners and, anyway, the amount of gratitude I feel is tough to gift wrap. But I already know what he's going to want for Father's Day: a three week va- cation. And, by the way, he will have earned it. IA
