omeless" for more than a decade, the
Troy-based Congregation Shir Tikvah
this week grew cme step closer to a per-
manent residence.
On Sunday, temple members vot-
ed to build a home for their congrega-
tion. While planning is still in the early stages,
leaders hope to break ground in about 12 months
and have a completed building by the beginning
of 1997.
The congregation owns a five-acre tract of land
on Wattles between Coolidge and Crooks in Troy.
The land was purchased 10 years ago to avoid
future difficulty of buying land in Troy.
"We feel the congregation has reached a point
where it's financially feasible to build," said Shir
Tikvah President Joe Katz. "We want to say to
ourselves and the community, We are here to
stay.' This congregation began with a few fami-
lies living east of Woodward and expanded geo-
graphically and spiri-
tually to accommodate
a diverse group of con-
gregants."
Shir Tikvah's Rabbi
Arnie Sleutelberg said,
"Now we can begin to
dream about the build-
ing we want to create.
We are in need of a spir-
itual home, a place we
can feel is ours and will
