paintings, Alex, is a large-scale
portrait of his friend, painter Alex
Katz. ObservingAlex from a dis-
tance of 12 feet or more, the im-
age is striking for the tension and
passion of Mr. Katz's bewildered
stare. But on a micro level, the
painting is a series of diamonds,
X's and crosses.
Complex patterns and depth
held within the image of a human
face is the hallmark of Mr. Close's
style.
In Self Portrait, Mr. Close of-
fers a glimpse of the artist's com-
plex vision. The painting is a
series of circles and circles with-
in circles. And, in the blissful
Emily, Mr. Close shows his ec-
centric side.
Mr. Close used his thumbs and
black paint, rather than a brush
to convey the texture, three-di-
mensionality and vulnerability
of a woman with a meandering
gaze.
For many artists, the procggf
of creating art izet31-ntiilual bat_

And then, the eternal question:
how to represent one's vision.
In Mr. Close's case, however,
his paintings and his effort are
truly inseparable. Ultimately, the
large-scale portraits reveal as
much about his subjects as they
do about himself. After all, it
takes a big heart, plenty of pa-
tience and a whole lot discipline
to fill up those canvases.
