The five-night "Sunsational Is-
rael," for example, is geared to in-
dependent travelers. It provides
them with what are described as
"top value" hotels in either
Jerusalem or Tel Aviv at $22 per
night, full Israeli buffet break-
fasts and a car rental at $9 per
day with unlimited mileage. The
cost of air fare on all packages is
additional.
One of the two extensions to
Jordan is called the "Classic." It
is a four-day, three-night pro-
gram with departures from Tel
Aviv or Jerusalem every Thurs-
day, a river crossing at the Al-
lenby Bridge, guided tours of the
major sites, hotels and full break-
fasts. Rates range between $287
in three-star hotels to $415 in
five-star establishments.
The Petra Extension of two
days and one night offers depar-
tures on Sundays and Wednes-
days from Eilat, a crossing into
Jordan at Arava just north of
Eilat, an overnight in Aqaba and
a full day at Petra. The price of
the program ranges between
$194 for a tourist class hotel to
$220 for first-class. Breakfasts
and dinners are included in both
categories.
Since Petra is much closer to
the Arava crossing at Eilat than
to the northern crossing at the
Allenby Bridge, visitors who take
the Arava route will have sever-
al more hours to spend in Petra.
Reservations for El Al's Israel
and Jordan should be made
through local travel agents.
Shabbat Policy
On El Al
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's na-
tional air carrier, El Al, will con-
tinue its longstanding policy of
not flying on Shabbat, Trans-
portation Minister Yisrael Kessar
has said.
His statement came amid
word that the privatization of the
airline could lead to a change in
policy.
