were these people and where did
they come from?
Basically, this diverse group of
campers all went on the weekend
excursion for the same reason: to
raft, camp and meet other Jews.
The ages of the paddlers in our
raft spanned from someone in his
early 20s to another person in his
early 40s. Our occupations were
just as diverse: we had a carpen-
ter, a doctor, a pediatric nurse, a
lawyer, students and a molecu-
lar biologist, just to name a few.
Some had been rafting before;
others had not.

As a first-time rafter, I was
nervous. Really nervous. A few
days before the trip I met a friend
for coffee at a local bookstore
where I found myself in the
sports section of the store. I be-
gan reading up on the New Riv-
er. Big mistake. It talked about
the river's Class V rapids, the ex-
ceedingly difficult, long, and vio-
lent rapids.
Hindsight definitely is 20/20.
Rafting, even the Class V rapid,
was a blast and, not as scary as
the description. I would do it
again in a second. The whole trip
taught me a lot.
I learned about overcoming
fear. I learned about the unspo-
ken common bond Jews share.
And, I also learned that the De-
troit Jewish community isn't as
small as everyone thinks it is.
