Q:Whenever I have a date I want
to impress I take her to my neigh-
borhood video store and we rent an
old Ronald Reagan film. Talk about
an exciting evening! What could be
more fun than slicing some carrot
sticks and sitting in front of the VCR
for a "Bonzo" fest?
So the other day I was thinking
about Ron and I started wondering
whether he ever appeared with any
Jewish leading ladies. Can Tell Me
Why help me out?
A: Wow. Carrot sticks and
Q: It seems I once heard a story
about someone who killed himself
in an effort to draw attention to the
Jews' plight during World War II.
Was that true?
A: The story you are won-
dering about is indeed true,
and all the more tragic because
just about everyone seems to
have forgotten Stefan Lux.
Born in 1888 in Vienna, Lux
was a World War I hero
— he was a volunteer
with the Austrian
army and wounded
twice. After the
war he worked in
Germany as a
film producer,
then moved
in 1933 to
Prague after
Hitler came
to power. He
later married
and had a son.
In the mid-1930s Lux be-
came increasingly concerned
about the Jewish plight in
eastern Europe. He wrote nu-
merous letters to world lead-
ers, none of which was
answered.
Finally, in an effort to draw
attention to the crisis, Lux on
July 3, 1936, shot himself in
the press gallery of the League
of Nations Assembly Hall in
Geneva.
Ronald Reagan. What girl
wouldn't want to marry you,
big fellow?
I'm sorry to say, I guess, that
the former president never
starred opposite any leading
Jewish actresses, though there
is one with a Jewish connec-
tion.
In 1940, Ronald Reagan ap-
peared in the Santa Fe Trail,
which also starred Olivia De
Havilland. Miss De Havilland,
probably best- known as
Melanie in Gone with the Wind
("Ashley! Oh, Ashley, Ashley,
Ashley!"), had one Jewish
grandparent (no more details
are available).
No doubt, though, countless
Jewish and gentile actresses
alike would have relished the
opportunity to appear with Mr.
Reagan in such wonderful,
wonderful films as Juke Girl
Q: Have any Jews won the Con-
(1942), Tugboat Annie Sails
Again (1940), Brother Rat and gressional Medal of Honor?
A: The Medal of Honor is
a Baby (1940) and Hellcats of
America's
highest military
(1957).
the Navy
award for bravery. It
was established by a
joint resolution of Con-
gress in 1862, with the
first medals presented
in 1863.
Of about 1,700
medals awarded in the
Civil War, five went to
Jews: Abraham Cohn,
Henry Heller, Leopold
Karpeles, Benjamin
Levy and David Or-
bansky.
Of 96 medals award-
ed in World War I, four
went to Jews: Sydney
Gumpertz, Philip
Katz, Benjamin Kauf-
man and William
Sawelson.
Of 432 medals
awarded in World War
II, two went to Jews:
Isadore Jachman and
Detroit's Raymond
Zussman.
Ronald Reagan: Hellcat.
Q: So many of the world's great
violinists are or were Jews, such
as Mischa Elman, Jascha Heifetz,
Nathan Milstein, Yehudi Menuhin,
David Oistrakh, Yitzhak Perlman,
Isaac Stern, Henryk Szering, Pin-
chas Zukerman. Yet all are men of
the 20th century. Were there any
outstanding Jewish violin players
in earlier times?
The
A:
greatest vio-
linist of the
19th century
— and some
believe of all
time — was a
Jew named
Joseph Joachim.
Born in 1831 in Hun-
gary, Joachim was a
child prodigy whose
teachers included Fe-
lix Mendelssohn. At age
18, he was appointed concert-
master of Franz Liszt's orches-
tra, and at 23 was named
conductor of the Royal
Hanoverian Orchestra. In 1866
he settled in Berlin as director
of the musical academy and
founded the Joachim Quartet,
the leading string quartet in
Europe.
He concertized, both with his
quartet and as a solo performer,
throughout his career and
gained the respect and admi-
ration of the most notable vir-
tuoso of his time. Among his
friends were composers Clara
and Robert Schumann, and Jo-
hannes Brahms. Among the
hundreds of pieces dedicated to
Joachim were the Brahms,
Bruch, Dvorak, and Schumann
violin concertos. Joachim him-
self composed violin concertos
and sonatas and songs. His
Hebrew
works include
Melodies, opus 9.
- To further his career,
Joachim at 24 converted to
Protestant Christianity.
Nonetheless, when a Jewish vi-
olinist was refused tenure at
the Royal Hanoverian Orches-
tra, Joachim in 1864 resigned
as conductor.
Joachim died in 1907. Among
his most notable students was
fellow Hungarian Jew Leopold
Auer (1845-1930), who later
was baptized into the Russian
Orthodox Church.
