The type of visitor has
changed, as well. According to the
Ministry of Tourism, about 70
percent of American tourists were
Jews until 1990. That number
has decreased to 42 percent to-
day. Mr. Ben-David in Chicago
believes it is unfortunate that
Jews generally are the first to
cancel trips to Israel when vio-
lence breaks out in the Middle
East.
Overall, tourism dropped by 40
percent during the Palestinian
intifada, 1986-1992. The unrest
had a profound effect on tour
guides, who experienced a corre-
sponding decline in business.
Tourism rebounded to a record
high in 1993 when 1.8 million
people traveled to Israel. In the
first three months of 1995, an-
other record-breaking number —
nearly 2 million — worldwide
have made the trip.
Arab-Israeli peace treaties have
boosted the number of tourists
who feel secure in a country with
friendly neighbors. Since the Vat-
ican recognized Israel, more
Catholics have made a pilgrimage.
And, sad but true, blood baths in
countries like the fog Hier Yu-
goslavia have rerouted tourism to
the land of milk and honey.
Mr. Ben-David believes op-
portunities for tour guides will
continue to expand as tourism in-
creases into the 21st century. He
cites three reasons why the in-
dustry will grow by 50 percent in
the next 15 years:
In 1996, the world will cele-
brate the 3,000th birthday of
Jerusalem. In 1998, Israel will
turn 50. And, in the year 2000,
Christians will honor the 2,000th
birthday of Jesus.
These events should put tour
guides on overdrive. Not that
their schedules aren't already
busy enough. One of the occupa-
tional hazards, guides say, is that
the job distances them from their
spouses and children, sometimes
for 20-day stretches.
"Every time you come home
from a mission, it's like a new
honeymoon," Mr. Rosenman
says.
Mr. Ayalon spends Shabbat
with his children and grandchil-
dren. Mr. Tennenbaum travels
home each night to see his fiance
in Tel Aviv. Mr. Wertheim, who
has a wife and three children in
greater Tel Aviv, says he misses
his family, but his days on the
road don't get lonely.
"I don't have too much time
alone," he says. "The people on
the bus become your family."
Despite the killer hours — of-
ten 16 a day — guides who ac-
companied 866 metro Detroit
missionaires in May say they love
what they do.
"You have to concentrate and
offer your people complete devo-
tion," Mr. Wertheim reflects. "It's
draining, yes, but it's absolutely
part of my whole being. I breathe
it." ❑
