Outside the Jerusalem Mall, a
large mobile exhibit fronted by a
sign reading "The People are
With the Golan" illuminated the
night. Every half-houi- some 150
people filled the benches inside
to watch a sound-and-light show
demonstrating the green, rugged
beauty of the Golan, the hardi-
ness of its 13,000 Jewish settlers,
and the region's value to Israel's
security.
Since the exhibit was mount-
ed in early May, about 60,000
people have visited, said one vol-
unteer. Bins are filled with mon-
ey contributed to the cause. Golan
mementos are on sale at four or
five kiosks. After the Shavuot hol-
iday, the exhibit packed up and
moved to Beersheva. It will tour
other major cities in Israel dur-
ing the next six months.
In contrast, activists in favor
of trading the Golan for a peace
treaty with Syria are staying off
the streets. Their main effort, car-
ried out by Peace Now, was a
Supreme Court petition that tem-
porarily blocked the 32 Golan set-
tlements from using municipal
funds for political activities like
the mobile exhibit.
While popular politicking goes
on, Israeli and Syrian negotiators
are getting ready to resume talks
about security arrangements.
Labor Knesset Member Avigdor
Kahalani is preparing to submit
a bill that would make it tougher
to relinquish the Golan. Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin is trying
to fight it off.
The government is repeating
its pledge that a peace agree-
ment with Syria involving with-
drawal from any part of the
Golan would have to be ratified
in a popular referendum. So if
things ever get that far, the de-
cisive factor will be Israeli pub-
lic opinion. At this stage of the
game, each side — those in fa-
vor of keeping the Golan, and
those in favor of trading it for
peace — is confident it will have
the people with them.
At the beginning of June, Is-
rael's most prominent pollster,
Dr. Mina Tsemach, asked re-
spondents: "Are you for or against
a full withdrawal from the Golan
Heights in stages, in return for
full peace with Syria and suitable
security arrangements?"
Twenty-nine percent were
"for," 58 percent "against," the
rest undecided. This finding was
perfectly consistent with polls
over the last three years, which
show Israelis going 2-1 against
the government's goal of a Golan-
for-peace deal with Syria.
