GDP On
The Rise

The economy grew more vigor-
ously than expected during the
first quarter of the year, as pri-
vate consumption, imports and
investment pushed up the Gross
Domestic Product (GDP) 5.5 per-
cent, the Central Bureau of Sta-
tistics reported.
The GDP measures the total
value of goods produced and ser-
vices provided by the economy.
A senior Treasury official said
the ministry will have to revise
upward its economic estimates
for the year based on the latest
figures.
The official, however, said the
Treasury will not change its an-
nual GDP growth estimate of 4.9
percent.

Sharp Rise
In Imports

Imports moderated in the past two
months, although the demand for
imported consumer goods contin-
ued to soar, the Central Bureau of
Statistics reported.
Imports rose 12.9 percent in
March and April, as industrial
machinery and equipment im-
ports fell a sharp 38.7 percent and
industrial input imports in-
creased a moderate 9.8 percent.
By contrast, consumer imports
continued their rapid expansion,
shooting up 103.4 percent in
March and April.
Durable imports — including
cars, furniture, refrigerators and
laundry machines — jumped 64
percent after soaring 111 percent
in January and February.
Exports, excluding diamonds,
increased 89 percent from No-
vember and December, including
a 5 percent rise in January and
February.
Industrial exports, which
make up about a third of indus-
trial production, rose 83 percent
after dropping 1 percent in the
preceding two months.

The Bank of Israel's "S," (state of
the economy) indicator jumped
1.2 percent in April, pushed by
steep increases in imports and
consumer spending.
According to the central bank,
the index rise points to an ex-
pansion in economic activity dri-
ven by growing demand.
Retail sales, a good consump-
tion indicator, soared 8.3 percent
last month after inching up 0.1
percent in March.
The Bank of Israel noted that
sharp rise may reflect the impact
of Passover shopping, despite ef-
forts to statistically neutralize
such seasonal factors.
