talked about what was kosher
and gave a recipe for "the wan-
dering blintz" ... From Peking to
Paris, from Budapest to Bratsk,
the blintz has left its mouthwa-
tering mark on every continent
... Follow its round-the-globe
travels and you would find the
blintz is nobody's homebody ...
The magazine featured orange
yogurt blintzes and recipes for an
Israeli picnic that packed a
punch.
In a 1979 publication, Apart-
ment Life, was an article called
"Beyond Cantonese" which told
you who's who and what's what
in regional Chinese cooking ... It
gave you menus for surprise par-
ties for six to 24 guests.
There's a magazine called Sin-
gle Parent with recipes for both
men and women who cook alone
and don't necessarily love it.
Cooking and cookbooks are out
there for every lifestyle and for
women and men of all ages ...
You may lean toward the old-
fashioned way of preparing
gourmet dishes with the latest
kitchen gadgets or Cuisinart
But from the microwave oven
way back to the old wood stove,
there's no substitute for home
cooking.

Good, old ways can
still be found.

CONGRATS ... To Lon
Grossman, author ofAround the
House and home improvement
expert with all the answers on
house problems and fix-it-up pro-
jects ... on his 50th birthday.
THEY'RE CALLED "The
Vintage Players" and fun to
watch ... "S.S. Loveline" by the
Oak Park Senior Center guys.
and gals is their fifth annual mu-
sical comedy ... set for June 15-
16 at the Oak Park Senior Center
on Oak Park Boulevard.
Over 20 seniors have dedicat-
ed the show to the memory of
Phyllis Bratt, who starred in the
four previous musicals before
passing on Sept. 3, 1994.
"S.S. Loveline" is a spoof on
Hello Dolly aboard a cruise ship
... written by Jackie Klein and
Fran Aaron ... Fran is also di-
rector ... Songs from South Pa-
cific, Damn Yankees and other
Broadway musicals accompany
the Hello Dolly melody.
Phyllis' husband, Lou Bratt,
will be stage manager for the mu-
sical comedy in his late wife's
honor.
Among the 20 seniors, starring
roles will be performed by Jack
and Cecilia Kaufman, Irene Pi
anin, Hy Pritz, Mimi Summers,
Richard Raymond, Yona Fried-
man and Alex Nemoff ... Ruth
Fisher does a rib-tickling rendi-
tion of Fanny Brice singing "Sec-
ond Hand Rose" ... Pianist for the

shows will be Linda Hindmarsh.
Admission of $6 includes light
refreshments after the perfor-
mances, with proceeds going to-
ward activities at the Oak Park
Senior Center ... For tickets, call
Executive Director Rhona Horner
or her staff, 691-7577.
5Qth ANNIVERSARY of Oak
Park is being celebrated this year
... folks are needed to volunteer
for its gala July 4th parade ...
graduates of Oak Park High and
current and former residents are
being sought.
Martha Reeves and the Van-
dellas will perform after the pa-
rade ... call Al Urpsis, 691-7555
... Jerry Naftaly is Oak Park's
dedicated and conscientious may-
or.
Of MAJOR interest, even
among traditionalists, is the
frozen fishloaf that Ungar Frozen
Foods in New Jersey is putting
out with the OU stamp ... It's
made with white and pike fish
and unlike the jar variety, folks
can adjust the flavor and texture
any way you like ... Since the
product is raw and comes solidly
frozen, it needs to be either baked
or boiled before being served ...
Texture can be varied from
more moist to firm by either leav-
ing it in the cooking liquid or
wrapping the fish loaf in paper
towel at the end of the cooking
time ... By adding different spices
like pepper, bay leaf, celery, etc.,
during cooking, one household
can enjoy a different tasting fish
from one plate to another.
Traditionally, the preparation
of gefilte fish involved finding a
reliable fresh-fish vendor, fillet-
ing the fish, grinding together the
ingredients and making sure not
to undercook or overcook the del-
icacy ... As preparation time, re-
liable fresh-fish stores and cost
became problematic, prepack-
aged jars became a compromise
solution.
Recently, during a sampling at
American Bulk Food in West
Bloomfield, a number of patrons
and especially their children were
pleasantly surprised with the
fresh taste and firm texture of the
Ungar's gefilte fish samples ...
Many of the children and adults
came back for seconds and thirds,
with the children asking parents
to take this kind home instead of
the jars ...
Some people from out of town
asked where they can purchase
this variety of gefilte fish in their
home state.
HOW ABOUT us guys yelling
discrimination Look at all the
business restaurants do on Moth-
er's Day because of the big year-
ly promotions ... Why can't
Father's Day be just as big? ...
Can't have one without the oth-
er, you know ...
Big Daddy's Parthenon on Or-
chard Lake Road, for example,
served 2,800 people on Mother's
Day ... no brunch, all table ser-
vice from 11 a.m. on. D
