in 15 seconds, and I prefer it with-
in eight seconds of when the joke
starts."
So the rabbi's jokes are fast-
paced, clean and brief. Some ex-
amples:
"We follow Jewish tradition in
our family. When our son was
born, we named him after my
grandfather. We call him 'Grand-
pa."
And "We found that with a
satellite dish you can pick up
some pretty obscure stations. Not
many people know about this, but
there's actually a Jewish cable
news network. Every hour a guy
meanders across the screen and
says, 'You don't want to know
about it.' "
Although his audiences' belly
laughs make him feel good, Rabbi
Alper gets the most nachas from
sick people's responses to his rou-
tines, which are available on tape.
No one has claimed to be cured
by hearing his jokes, but dozens
of people have told him their con-
ditions improved after listening
to his humor.
This joke, he said, has been a
big hit:
"I was taking a hike the other
day, thinking about the fact
there's just a handful of Jews in
our little town, feeling isolated
and a little lonely. Suddenly a
wind came across the valley and
through the mountains, and I
heard a voice saying, 'Build a deli
and they will come.' "
Rabbi Alper hasn't opened a
deli in East Dorset yet. But he
is one of the first to open up the
field of stand-up comedy to men
of the cloth. And, judging from
the success of his tapes and his
packed tour schedule, audiences
are pining for the Alper style of
Jewish humor.

Rabbi Alper will perform
