several school assemblies were
begun with the black national
anthem ("Lift Every Voice And
Sing") instead of the "Star Span-
gled Banner" and that some ad-
ministrators were "insensitive to
people of different religious back-
grounds."
They also included complaints
about prayer at school functions,
negative comments about Jew-
ish employees wearing religious
symbols, punitive action taken
\.) or threatened against employees
who properly take personal days
off for religious holidays, and the
hiring of consultants and com-
munity activists known to advo-
cate racial, ethnic or religious
bigotry.
Mr. Elliott said he has heard
similar complaints from the Lati-
no and Arab communities.
Mr. Elliott took the issues to
Detroit Public Schools (DPS) Su-
/ perintendent David Snead; Don-
ald Boggs, president of the
district's Organization of School
Administrators and Supervisors;
and Charles Wells III, director
of the DPS Office of Labor Af-
fairs.
The group agreed, Mr. Elliott
said, "to neither condone nor tol-
erate these activities."
\ They will address the issues
at administrative and building-
level meetings, through weekly
principals' notes to staff, and by
appointing a human-rights ad-
ministrator to hear complaints.
Teachers also have the option
to work with union leaders or file
grievances.
"We have enough problems
here in Detroit," Mr. Elliott said.
"I can't imagine people doing
what they do, but it's there. If it
has to come from the top (Dr.
Snead), that's what we'll do. But
the teachers will have to follow
up."
The Jewish teachers, who met
in December and again in Feb-
ruary, formed two committees
May 10. One will do monitoring
and advocacy — "tracking issues
and dealing with them," accord-
ing to the Jewish Community
Council's David Gad-Harf— and
the other will work on network-
ing and programs to reduce feel-
ings of isolation on the job. ❑
