Who Is A Mitzvah Nero?
C
ontrary to popular opinion, the word mitz-
vah does not mean good deed, suggesting
an optional act. It means commandment
or religious duty.
Each year, The Jewish News honors men,
women and children in our community who feel
so commanded to perform acts of remarkable
kindness. They don't do it for awards. They don't
do it for plaques. They don't do it for recognition.
They do it because they feel it is their duty
to help others.
"We are so fortunate to be able to see, to hear
and have a home," said former Mitzvah Hero
Ron Elkus. "I think it's important that, as a Jew,
I give some of that back."
These are the Mitzvah Heroes: the gentle souls
who, day in and day out, quietly go about do-
ing kindness. Or, in the words of author Dan-
ny Siegel, "They live a life suffused with good
works."
