Mr. Gutnik was by now visit-
ing the outback himself to wit-
ness the exploration being
conducted by his large team, a
white miner's helmet replacing
his usual dark fedora. Presum-
ably on the principle that it can't
hurt and maybe it will help, his
chief geologist, a non-Jew, flew
to Brooklyn for an audience with
the rebbe arranged by Mr. Gut-
nik.
The rebbe's saintly aura was
by now being interpreted by his
followers as indication that he
was none other than the Messi-
ah. Mr. Gutnik was a principal
figure behind the Messiah is
Coming campaign in Israel.
Acting, he says, on the rebbe's
advice to also search in Western
Australia for diamonds, Mr. Gut-
nik took Great Central into part-
nership with a company owned
by the De Beers diamond syndi-
cate. Despite the rebbe's predic-
tion that a major diamond find
was assured, the search proved
disappointing and the partner-
ship with De Beers dissolved
with some acrimony.
The enterprising young Chasid
with the outgoing manner caught
the fancy of the Australian me-
dia, particularly when it was re-
ported that in his large-scale
prospecting he had mobilized the
Messiah to his side.
The Wall Street Journal pub-
lished an article suggesting that
Mr. Gutnik may have exploited
publicity about his contact with
a purported Messiah as a gim-
mick to raise the stock's value.
Mr. Gutnik says that the inves-
tigation into the company found
nothing amiss and that trading
in the stock was duly resumed.
He subsequently removed dia-
mond exploration from Great
Central's aegis and set up a new
company, Astro Mining, to con-
centrate on that search which he
still believes will justify the
rebbe's optimistic predictions.
It was the rebbe's inspiration,
says Mr. Gutnik, that led him to
dig far deeper at his open-pit gold
mine at Bronzewing than is con-
ventional practice. The heavy in-
vestment there and at his nearby
Jundee mine paid off with the
discovery of deposits holding
more than 4 million ounces of
gold with a potential market val-
ue, he says, of $1 billion.
Not resting on his laurels, he
is optimistic about finding more
gold in the region. "We stand by
our pledge to find many new gold
fields through the most aggres-
sive prospecting plan Western
Australia has ever seen," said Mr.
Gutnik. 0
