FITNESS

I'm Dee Hakala, the first winner of the
Nike Fitness Innovation Award. I have
created a unique fitness program specifically
designed for the needs of the overweight,
out-of-shape, or medically supervised. And
I did it by starting with me!

When I began developing the program, I had
lots of medical problems and weighed close
to 300 pounds. Now I'm fit, my medical
problems are gone, I have lost over 100
pounds and 35 inches.

More than anything else, I believe fitness
should be fun and non-intimidating. After
all, fitness isn't an event, it's a way of life.

"THE NEW FACE OF FITNESS"

If you feel like I do and would like to
participate in this unique fitness and
wellness program here in Oakland County, I
hope you'll call Jennifer Mills for more
information today.

biological researchers with on-line
access to daily updated, interna-
tional biology databases and en-
ables them to interact with
genome investigators abroad. The
Institute is the chartered opera-
tor of the Israel National Node
(INN) of the European Molecular
Biology Network (EMBnet), Pro-
fessor Marvin Edelman of the
Plant Genetics Department serv-
ing as its national and interna-
tional coordinator.
The Institute of Biochemistry
and Biophysics in Warsaw —
headed by Professor Wlodzimierz
Zagorsky — has been operating
its own national EMBnet node
for less than a year, and cooper-
ation between the two national
nodes, both with regard to soft-
ware development and manage-
ment approaches, is profitable to
scientists in both countries. In
pat titular, it is helping to reduce
the run-in problems associated
with setting up and operating
new database systems, such as
that being built in Poland.
The Israel-Polish collabora-
tion, which involves hands-on
workshops, courses and ex-
change visits between the two
centers, is supported by a UN-
ESCO grant divided equally be-
tween the Weizmann Institute
and the Institute of Biochemistry
and Biophysics.

Infertile Male
Impregnates Wife

Four lone, microscopic sperm
cells extracted from the testicles
of a long-infertile man have been
injected into four of his wife's ova.
The woman, to whom he has
been married for 10 childless
years, successfully underwent
implantation and is in the third
month of pregnancy.
The highly unusual treatment
was performed in the In-Vitro
Fertilization Unit at Hadassah-
Hebrew University Hospital in
Jerusalem. The 30-year-old cou-
ple were treated by Dr. Aby
Levin, director, and Dr. David
Weiss, deputy of Hadassah's IVF
Unit.
Under anesthesia, a fine nee-
dle was inserted into the testi-
cles to remove the droplet of
sperm cells that could be found
in the man who was regarded,
for all intents and purposes, as
completely infertile. Each sperm
was injected into an ovum by mi-
cromanipul2tion.One resulted in
an embryo, which was-implant-
ed in his wife and developed nor-
mally.
Dr. Levin, who presented the
unusual case at a conference of
the Israel Society for Fertility Re-
search, said the new technique
"opens the possibility of solving
the problem of some men diag-
nosed with irreversible insuffi-
ciency of the testicles. This is the
first attempt at this approach." 0
