are not uniformly positive. Although peace itself is certainly going to be a longer and more torturous
road than we might have hoped for or imagined, it is difficult to believe that the overall goal of a long-term eas-
ing of hostilities in the region will be derailed.
Perhaps as a by-product of the peace process there appears to be a general feeling that with the coming of
peace there will be a change in the relationship between Israel and the Jews of the Diaspora. Israel under siege is an Israel that is
easy to rally around and support financially. A strong and developing Israel that perhaps needs less help raises questions about the
nature of past and future commitments. Why provide financial support and comfort to Israel when it might seem that Israel should
be able to go it alone? Surely there are plenty of problems and causes on which we can focus right here in America.
It strikes me that this type of argument contains at least one fundamental error. Ideologically, the State of Israel is not a state for
Israelis alone. It was founded as a Jewish state of the Jewish People and for the Jewish People. Israel's Law of Return makes it unique
among the nations of the Earth. Israel is a country that is open to any Jew who wishes to come and settle there. Having a Jewish State
for the Jewish People is a right of all Jews; maintaining it is also the responsibility of all Jews in partnership.
The relationship between Israel and the Diaspora has always been based on pluralism. There have always been many
different organisations through which the Jewish People and Israel could live up to their respective responsibilities, organizations
through which the links to our history, our heritage, and our future can be strengthened. Karen Kayemeth LeIsrael, the Jewish Nation-
al Fund, stands as one such organization. For over 90 years, JNF has planted the trees, built the roads, housing and infrastructure,
created employment, and provided the water that allowed Israel to become what it is today. Indeed, the JNF has provided life to Is-
rael and its people.
Although we might like to believe that the peace process has made things easier in Israel, the fact is that the needs of a successful
and growing Israel are greater than ever before. We in America should certainly be aware of these needs and we should think of
funds supplied to the JNF as a commitment and not as charity. A commitment has a significance beyond mere money. A commit-
ment to the work of the Jewish National Fund is a direct link between Israel and us. It is an involvement of heart, mind, solidarity
and identification with the history, heritage and future survival and growth of all the Jewish people in the world, certainly not a bad
goal for our lives.
I hope you will call Ed Rosenthal at the Jewish National Fund office (810-557-6644) to learn more and to offer your
support.
