r. Milton Shiffinan of West
BloOmfield has a fascina-
tion for science, research
and Judaism.
In Israel's Bar-Ilan Universi-
ty, the West Bloomfield resident
has found all three.
Dr. Shiffman will be honored
June 15 in Israel when Bar-Ilan
bestows upon him an honorary
doctorate. He is being recognized
for his contributions to the uni-
versity: He helped forge a link be-
tween Bar-Ilan and the U.S.
National Institutes of Health and
funded an annual scientific schol-
ar-in-residence program at the
Ramat-Gan campus.
Dr. Shiffman was a surgeon for
25 years and now chairs the Sun
Communities Inc. real estate
firm. He says his "fascination"
with Bar-Ilan University began
10 years ago when he was ex-
posed to the school's dual-educa-
tion process. Bar-Ilan stresses
both Jewish studies as well as
secular subjects.
Bar-Ilan has deep roots in De-

troit and was established in the
1950s through the efforts of
Phillip Stollman and others. Its
leaders have made many visits
here, and Dr. Shiffman describes
his friendship with former Bar-
Ilan president Dr. Emanuel
Rackman as special. "I told him
I don't want my name on a build-
ing," Dr. Shiffman said, and the
two conceived the visiting-schol-
ar program.
Dr. Shiffman's contributions
permit the university to bring in
outside scientists for four to six
weeks each year.
The second program, the co-
operative agreement with NIH,
allows Bar-Ilan scientists to work
with "the greatest research in-
stitute in the world," Dr. Shiff-
man said. "The relationships are
phenomenal."
Detroiters who previously have
been cited with honorary doctor-
ates by Bar-Ilan include Phillip,
Max and Frieda Stollman, Philip
Slomovitz, Max Fisher, Paul
Zuckerman and Dr. Leon Fill.
Dr. Shiffman, who prefers to
make quiet contributions, said he
agreed to the public honor "be-
cause I wanted to be an example
for my children and grandchil-
dren. My dad taught me what
charity means and I'm trying to
teach my children."
A past president of Adat
Shalom Synagogue, Dr. Shiffman
also is involved with Jewish Vo-
cational Service, Jewish Nation-
al Fund, Machon L'Torah and
others.
He and wife Lois will travel to
Israel as part of Bar-Ilan's Lead-
ership Mission, which is taking
150 individuals from the United
States and will culminate with
the June 15 ceremony. CI

Detroit Reacts
To Teacher Complaints

ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR

etroit Public Schools have
initiated meetings and
memos in reaction to com-
plaints from Jewish teach-
ers in the school district.
For the third time in six
months, an informal gathering of
teachers has expressed concern
about perceptions of anti-Semi-
tism, racism and sexism in the
schools. The last meeting, May
10, was attended by Detroit Fed-
eration of Teachers President

D

John Elliott. The meetings have
been sponsored by the American
Jewish Committee, the Anti-
Defamation League and the Jew-
ish Community Council of
Metropolitan Detroit.
"Most of the complaints are
about supervisors," Mr. Elliott
said. Some were of a general nay
Wm and several were as much as -\
two years old, "but there were
several solid complaints."
They included charges that
