Rare Art
From The
Islands

The Detroit Institute of Arts has
organized the first comprehen-
sive showing of masterpieces
from the South Pacific islands to
be seen in American museums
in 15 years.
"Island Ancestors: Oceanic
Art from the Masco Collection"
opens at the DIA on Sunday,
June 11. The exhibition is com-
prised of 76 masterpieces derived
from the Masco Corporation's art
collection, the only major corpo-
rate collection of its kind in the
United States.
"Oceania" is a term used for
a group of once-isolated islands
in the South Pacific including
Australia, New Guinea, Melane-
sia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
The inhabitants of these
widespread islands had to adapt
themselves to a range of envi-
ronments. The art of the
collection reflects those people's
beliefs in the unpredictability
and all-pervading power of na-
ture.
The artists of the Pacific used
almost anything from their nat-
ural environment to express
these beliefs and philosophies.
Leaves, ferns, stems, seeds, fruit,
moss, bark and parts of animals,
including tusks, shark teeth and
bone, were utilized.
The collection includes strik-
ing wooden figures, masks,
drums and dance regalia. Many
of the objects were painted with
elaborate designs and images,
each a rare treasure that sur-
vived the tumultuous events of
Oceanic colonial history.
A fully illustrated exhibition
catalogue, written by Allen
Wardwell, former curator of
ethnographic art at the Art In-
stitute of Chicago, will be avail-
able in the DIA museum shops
for $32. The exhibition was or-
ganized by the Detroit Institute
of Arts with support from Mas-
co Corporation and the DIA
Founders Society.
Exhibition admission includ-
ing a recorded tour is $5 adults;
$2 children and students; adult
groups of 10 or more $4 each;
free on Wednesday with muse-
