TREEHOUSE page 16
From there he built a frame-
work upward, added a roof and
finished the outside with ter-
mite-resistant redwood. The win-.
dows are permanently open.
"I considered wood shutters
to keep out winter weather, but
I thought even that was too elab-
orate," he said. "As kids, we
thought that's what was great
about it — it was wide open. If it
was cold up there, well, you got
cold."
Paul may add wood or as-
phalt shingles to the roof, hang
a swing and perhaps plant some
flowering vines around the base
of the tree, but he won't paint the
house.
"I don't like to put any paint
or finish on the outside of a tree-
have happen was for this ladder
to fall," Paul said. "I considered
a rope ladder, but she was only
- 7. And I didn't want to nail any-
thing to the tree."
On each step is a rock that
Natasha collected and decorat-
ed. Inside, the treehouse is a cozy
nook with a carpeted floor.
"We debated about putting
down carpet," Paul said.
"You don't buy carpet for tree-
houses, but we wanted to cover
the crude wooden surface and
make it softer."
He solved that dilemma with
a scrap someone was hauling to
the dump. It isn't nailed down so
that it can be taken up and shak-
en periodically.
Natasha has furnished the
house," he said. "You're supposed
to let it age naturally so that
eventually it sort of disappears
into the tree."
Also hanging from the tree is
a bell that serves as a doorbell to
alert Natasha that someone is
coming up.
To get to the treehouse,
Natasha climbs a sturdy set of
stairs bolted into the structure.
"The last thing I wanted to
treehouse with small chairs, art
supplies and lots of books. She
invites friends who come to vis-
it (once her whole class from her
elementary school) to draw pic-
tures or leave messages on the
walls. Besides reading, she says
her favorite pastimes there are
painting rocks from the beach,
drawing pictures and cutting out
shapes.
