see the sacred places and to re-
trace the roots of Catholicism."
On the future of Jerusalem,
Cardinal Maida said the issue of
whether or not the holy city
should be united is "charged with
a lot of emotion. People with good
will can work together for an ac-
commodation. It's been a problem
for so long, but I think it's some-
thing we should continue to work
on."
Outside of the cardinal's living
room, the rain intensifies, hitting
the windows with streaks of rain
drops. He looks down at his
hands and talks about a world
that he worries about. A world,
he said, commemorating a world
war of 50 years ago but that to-
day must still contend with dead-
ly issues in the name of religion.
"How do we achieve peace and
harmony?" he asked. "Religion
has to have a key role to play. You
have to look to your roots. We are <
all blessed with a forgiving God.
But how do you feel blessed when
you hear about the terrible things
going on in the former Yugoslavia
and Soviet Union? It brings tears
to your eyes that innocent people
must suffer.
Anti-Semitism is
"a violent crime."

"And I know that the Holo-
caust was a devastating experi-
ence for humanity. As a religious
leader, it's important to work
hard to make sure that some-
thing like the Holocaust will nev-
er, ever be forgotten, and never,
ever happen again. The will of '
God is that He will provide good-
ness for all human beings."
The pope, he says, has a feel-
ing for the oppressed because he
lived his life under Communist
rule for so many years, where the
state was deified instead of God.
And the Jews, he added, were
among the most oppressed.
Locally, he says his work with
the Jewish community has "been
a mutual thing.
"The Jewish community em-
braced me and welcomed me," he
said. "It's been a very wonderful
relationship, one that I want to
continue and make even
stronger." ❑
