to a favorite youth director and
looking ahead to a summer filled
with fun and learning.
At a party held for high-school
students and their parents,
about 250 participants ate hot
dogs, hamburgers and salad and
spoke of filling the next few
months with camp fun and trav-
el abroad. The event, sponsored
by the George and Anne Roth
Youth Education and Awareness
Fund, also included a presenta-
tion by the Jewish Ensemble
Theatre.
For Naomi Loebl and Talia
Loss, summer means taking a
break from a grueling freshman
year of public high school. Both
girls will relax at camp this sum-
mer, practicing their skills at wa-
ter sports and making new
friends.
While they are excited about
their plans, they are sad to
leave.
"When I came to temple high
school, I thought I would hate it,"
Ms. Loebl said. "But it was fun.
Everyone was so friendly."
Rick Goren, youth director,
will finish up the last two weeks
of his job and head directly to
Brandeis University where he
will beg-in a 15-month master's
program. He hopes to finish in
June 1996 with a degree in man-
agement of human services.
"I am excited to go but I am go-
ing to miss this, the kids, the
teen-agers, the staff," he said.
"I have learned a lot from all of
them."
While the students acknowl-
edged that they, too, would miss
Mr. Goren, some were preoccu-
pied with their own plans.
After a tough year as a junior
at Andover High School, Amy
Marks, the former president of
the Temple Israel youth group,
will attend a leadership training
camp to prepare her for her next
job. This summer she will begin
her reign as Michigan regional
president of North American
Federation of Temple Youth.
"Junior year was the hardest
so far," she said, with the pres-
sures of SATs, ACTs and chal-
lenging classes. "I look forward
to taking a break."
Getting out of school means
getting closer to boarding planes
for Shayna Loss and Adam Al-
lenberg. Both plan to leave the
country this summer. Ms. Loss
will tour Europe with the An-
dover choir and Mr. Allenberg
hopes to see much of Israel dur-
ing a two-month stay.
"I can't wait," Ms. Loss said.
"It is a month away and I am
counting down the days."
"This was a good place to
make friends out of (public) high
school because everyone is Jew-
ish. That just makes it easier,"
Mr. Allenberg said. "I look for-
ward to going to a place where
nearly everyone is Jewish. That
should be a change." 0
