lumber yards, needs a second
sealer application after a year.
Deck experts generally agree
that all decks should be sealed
every year or two. One way to
tell if a sealer is needed is to
watch rain water hitting the
deck. If the water beads, the seal-
er is still effective. Before a seal-
er is applied, the deck must be
thoroughly clean and dry — usu-
ally two to four days after pow-
er washing.
There are dozens of deck seal-
ers on the market for do-it-your-
selfers. The best advice is to
carefully read the labels on the
can. Some, like Thompson's Wa-
ter Seal, are basically water re-
pellents. Others, including
Flood's CWF UV and Cabot
Clear Solution, include sun-
screen. Sealers with sunscreen
give wood a light honey-colored
or amber tone. Other sealers,
like Lasting Paint's Top of the
Deck, not only include UV in-
hibitors, but also contain oils that
condition the wood.
Most sealers are transparent
or translucent, but some like
Penofin and Wolman's Cedar
Tone, come with a grain en-
hancer. The Nusbaums, for ex-
ample, decided that they wanted
their deck to be a darker color
and chose to have a walnut-
toned sealer applied. While the
darker shades retain their color
longer, the natural look of the
lighter colors is also popular,
says Mr. Murray, who offers cus-
tomers a choice of several colors.
Sealers generally cost between
$16 and $25 a gallon. More ex-
pensive is Sikken's two-product
application of Cetol Deck Base
and Cetol Deck, which puts a fin-
ish on a deck that is almost like
varnish. It costs between $35
and $50 a gallon, but mainte-
nance is very low and UV pro-
tection lasts for up to two years.
Every other year, Joyce Gold-
en and Ron Rich of West Bloom-
field faithfully undertake the task
of applying water repellent seal-
er to their deck. The job of brush-
painting the floor and railings
takes all afternoon, but is the only
heavy-duty maintenance they've
done in 10 years. The secret to
keeping their deck looking new
may be in the timing. They do the
sealing job at the end of the sum-
mer season to prepare the wood
for the beating it will take during
the winter months. El
