This year, designers are not
limiting their creativity to a sin-
gle style, such as art deco or Mi-
lan; they are blending old with
new, creating stylish, comfort-
able looks with color and texture,
and taking their cues from the
surrounding environment. Be-
low are several ideas for ways
you can spruce up your home for
the new season:
Color: Whether you're paint-
ing, recovering furniture or sim-
ply adding a few new touches,
design forecasters are looking at
four color palettes to brighten in-
teriors. White, always popular
for walls, will be accented with
herb-garden and vegetable col-
ors. Using a variety of whites,
from the brightest bisque to
calming vanilla ' , adds depth and
dimension to a room.
A second palette goes for the
bold, bright hues of green, blue,
amethyst and coral. It's the ex-
travagant look of south-of-the-
border pottery and serapes.
The next palette goes in the
opposite direction, combining
timeless earth tones of terra cot-
ta and brown, particularly sooth-
ing in the West because they
mimic the local landscape.
Finally, look to incorporating
jewel-tone colors found in ethnic
fabrics. Red clay, magenta, rose
violet and a rich gold can be
blended in accents to create a
comfortable Northwest-style re-
treat.
Painting in unexpected places:
Perhaps you're thinking of adding
a new coat of ecru to the walls.
Well, how about a dash of whim-
sy on hardwood floors, kitchen
cabinets, cement patios or even
your stairs? A stenciled runner
adds a homey feel to hardwood
stairs. Cut the stencils yourself
from Mylar and use acrylic craft
paints followed by several coats
of high-gloss varnish.
Use exterior latex house paint
to create a ruglike effect on a con-
crete patio. Porch stairs can have
simple designs like stars or flow-
ers sponged on them with exte-
rior enamel paint. ❑
