T

he message delivered to
delegates assembled for the
Jewish Community Coun-
cil's 58th annual meeting
was that 1994-95 was a good year
for the council in working with
other groups.
Before a crowd of 200 at Tem-
ple Israel May 17, Executive Di-
rector David Gad-Harf said he
was pleased with the improved
relations between other ethnic
and racial groups over the past
year. In one instance, he found
himself in a lawmaker's office dis-
cussing the impact of welfare cut-
backs on immigrants with
representatives from numerous
local groups.
"The expected schisms be-
tween blacks and Jews, Arabs
and Jews were invalidated by
this show of support," he said.
Mr. Gad-Harf said he also
looks forward to a year when the
Council will move closer to es-
tablishing a Detroit Jewish Com-
munity Network. Using the
information superhighway, the
JCCouncil hopes to communicate
with Jews who may not live in
the immediate area or may not
have contact with the communi-
tY.
"We, too, must grab hold of the
limitless opportunities this form
of communication holds for the
Jewish community," Mr. Gad-
Harf said.
The meeting also served as the
election of members of the board
of directors and the officers.
Most JCCouncil officers were
re-elected to one-year terms.
President Allen Zemmol, Vice
Presidents Robert Brown, Elaine
Driker and Kathleen Straus and
Treasurer Howard Wallach will
serve in the 1995-1996 year. Bet-
sy Winkelman will replace An-
drew Zack as secretary.
Newly elected board members
who will serve three-year terms
include Pearlena Bodzin, Rober-

berg, Gary Torgow and Dr. Jef-
frey Weingarten were re-elected
for three-year terms.
Barbara Levin was elected to
a two-year board term and Rab-
bi Daniel Nevins to a one-year
term.
Board members who finished
their terms and will not return
include Andrea Fischer, Carole
Kaftan, Alden Lieb, Judy Silberg
Loebl, Janelle Miller, Charles
Silow, Robert Stone, Gabriel Wer-
ba and Vlad Tsoglin.
Following the election, a pan-
el of four area ethnic, racial and
religious representatives dis-
cussed building coalitions. Jerry
Hodak, an anchor for TV-2, mod-
erated the panel discussion.
Sister Monica Kostielney, pres-
ident and chief executive officer
of the Michigan Catholic Confer-
ence; Victor Begg, president of
the Muslim American Alliance;
